These may not sound like typical questions for an econo-mist to ask. But Steven D. Levitt is not a typical economist. He is a much-heralded scholar who studies the riddles of everyday life—from cheating and crime to sports and child-rearing—and whose conclusions turn conventional wisdom on its head.

Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. They usually begin with a mountain of data and a simple question. Some of these questions concern life-and-death issues; others have an admittedly freakish quality. Thus the new field of study contained in this book: freakonomics.

Through forceful storytelling and wry insight, Levitt and Dubner show that economics is, at root, the study of incentives—how people get what they want, or need, especially when other people want or need the same thing. In Freakonomics, they explore the hidden side of . . . well, everything. The inner workings of a crack gang. The truth about real-estate agents. The myths of campaign finance. The telltale marks of a cheating schoolteacher. The secrets of the Klu Klux Klan.

What unites all these stories is a belief that the modern world, despite a great deal of complexity and downright deceit, is not impenetrable, is not unknowable, and—if the right questions are asked—is even more intriguing than we think. All it takes is a new way of looking.

Freakonomics establishes this unconventional premise: If morality represents how we would like the world to work, then economics represents how it actually does work. It is true that readers of this book will be armed with enough riddles and stories to last a thousand cocktail parties. But Freakonomics can provide more than that. It will literally redefine the way we view the modern world.

Though the idea of listening to an economics text may bring to mind nightmarish visions of incomprehensible facts, figures and graphs, this audiobook is refreshingly accessible and engrossing. Journalist Dubner reads with just the right mix of enthusiasm and awe, revealing juicy morsels of wisdom on everything from what sumo wrestlers and teachers have in common (a propensity to cheat) to whether parents can really push their kids to greatness by buying them Baby Einstein toys and enlisting them in numerous before- and after-school activities (not really). The only section that doesn't translate well to the format is the final one on naming conventions. The lists of "White Girl Names" and "Black Girl Names," and "Low-End" names and "High-End" names can be mind-numbing, though the text that breaks up these lists will intrigue. Overall, however, these unusual investigations by Levitt, the "rogue" of the subtitle, make for meaty—and entertaining—listening.

合理的期待形成や収穫逓増といった大きな物語がなくなったあとで、独創的なデータ活用で意外なことを経済学的に説明する名手として、クルーグマンの次代のホープとして名をはせるレヴィットの本。新古典派の教義をひたすらふりまわすベッカーとちがい、あっと驚くきめ細かなデータ活用による繊細な分析が楽しい。犯罪と刑罰等の関係についての分析や、おそらく最も有名なのが日本の相撲の八百長を実証してしまった得体の知れない分析！　それらが楽しく解説されています。ときどき文がだれるのが難点。

中学・高校に通っていて、「経済学部」って何？つぶしの効く学部？って思っている方におすすめ！マルクス経済、マクロ経済、カタカナで聞くと訳わからんし、漢字で「経済」っている言葉も、ピンと来ない言葉です。

物事の本質は何？その因果関係を考える基礎になる本です。

中高でも出会わなかったこの本、せめて経済学部に入学して、一番初めに手にとりたかったな。卒論の内容に困っている学部生にもお勧めできる本ですが。もちろん、中高で経済を教えている先生方も…

High brown economics it ain't! Its entertainment...just like any other good read for the airplane, doctor's office, bathroom and subway ride. If your only expectation is to get a few good hummms and giggles and wows, then you're going to love it. If you're thinking your going to get an indepth academic review of stringent economic factoids, put it back on the book shelf.

I did appreciate the other two sales recommendations found here also:

- The Black Book of Outsourcing by D Brown & S Wilson (EXCELLENT!)

- The World is Flat by T Friedman

All three came as part of a group offer here and all were great informative reads. A Million Thanks.
