THE VERVEの復活作。先日のサマソニも観ました。
その前にフジで観たマイブラが余りに現役感たっぷりだったため、それに比べるとヴァーヴのライブは「同窓会」的なノリというかノスタルジック感が否めなかったし、演奏もアンバランスな場面もあった。
だが、後日思い返してみると、マイブラとヴァーヴを比較する事自体が違うのかもしれないなあと思うようになった。だって、そもそも違うバンドだものね。

そして、過剰な期待を抱かずに、本作を聴いた。
びっくりした。
素晴らしいのである。ただただ、そこには素晴らしい音楽が溢れていた。
先行シングルのM-2はあくまで序章に過ぎなかった。
アルバムトータルのクオリティがとても高いのだ。
ダイナミズムがあるし、アレンジも大雑把な部分と細かい部分が良い具合に同居している。
何度も何度も通して聴きたくなる、最近では珍しい盤だ。

まだ数回しか聴いていないが、この先、何度も聴く事になるんだと思う。

サマソニの時に思った気持ちが信じられないような感覚。
もしかして、ずーーっと活動してたんじゃないか？
THE VERVE。
良いバンド。

期待以上の質の高さに感激しながら聴いています。

ザ・ヴァーブの結成は古いのですが、10年前に800万枚を越すセールス記録したアルバム「アーバン・ヒムス（"都会派聖歌"の意）」発表後、メンバー間の確執もあり解散していました。そして、リード・ボーカルのリチャード・アシュクロフトによると楽しむために再結成しアルバムを製作したそうです。

「フォース」には「アーバン・ヒムス」に収録されていた「ビター・スウィート・シンフォニー」のような大ヒットするような曲がありません。これは、コールドプレイの「美しき生命」や「サージェント・ペパー」と似た感じです。しかし、すべての曲の質が高いのです。そして、いかにもブリティッシュ・ロックというオープニングからダンスミュージックのようなファースト・シングルとなった2曲目へのつながりもぴったりです。

その後も美しさと重さを織り交ぜながら全10曲が流れていきます。国内盤は2曲ボーナスが入っているそうですので、それも聴いてみたいと思います。聴いていないのではっきりとは分かりませんが、流れがなくなるからアルバムからは外したのでしょう。

アメリカ盤は見開きの紙ジャケで付属する冊子には各メンバーのきついジョークが一言ずつ書かれています。リチャードは、「現代人は中国製の靴底で歩きましょう」

しばらく聴き続けられるアルバムです。

　「本物のバンドはずっと一緒にはいられないんだ。ずっと一緒にやってるなんてリアルじゃないんだよ」と語るリチャード・アシュクロフト。その言葉通り、リアルの在り処を探るかのようにして何度もお互いを傷つけ合い、お互いを引寄せ合い、解散と再結成を繰り返したバンド、ザ・ヴァーヴ。衝撃のデビューから97年の『アーバン・ヒムス』を経て完全に沈黙すまでの狂気の四年間は、時の経過と共に90年代の神話へと昇華し、次の世代にもしっかりと語り継がれていった。そして迎えた08年。多くの伝説的なバンドが再結成を果たしたこの一年、最も完璧なレベルでそれを成し遂げたのが、このザ・ヴァーヴだった。それは「前進」を意味するアルバム・タイトルにも強く象徴されている。『アーバン・ヒムス』で鳴らされた燃え尽きる直前のピュアネスのような漂白された音像ではなく、どこまでも長大でノイズに満ちた、決して円満具足とは言い難いバンド・サウンド。長いブランクを経ての本当に久しぶりのジャム・セッションでこれが自然と出てきたというのは、それがまさにザ・ヴァーヴというバンドの本質だからだ。彼らの未来は、いつだってこのノイズの「その先」にしかなかった。人と人がリアルに繋がり合うということ。そこには当然のように摩擦が生じる。しかし、それを恐れる必要など何もない。“ラヴ・イズ・ノイズ”。彼らにとって、その摩擦というノイズとは、紛うことなき愛なのだから。
