コンピュータ・プログラミングについての本は、工学系を中心に膨大な数にのぼる。またコンピュータ技術とその文化について語る本もたくさんある。そしてプログラミングをアートやデザインの観点から解説した本も、その数を増やしている。しかし、２１世紀を１０年越えた時点で、プログラミング・コードから、その美学的な意味を考察し解説した本で充分に語ったものはこの本を除いては無いと言ってもいいかもしれない。世界中のデジタル系のアートやデザインを学ぶ者に最適なプログラミング開発環境であるprocessingを開発し提供したCasey Reasであるから書けたものであるだろう。この本で説明されている「コード」そのものもhttp://formandcode.com/からダウンロードできる。

Form + Code is a wonderful glimpse of how computation can be applied as art. The book does not delve into anything too deep so don't be expect pages of technical know how. This book shouldn't be skipped over by those who already know the technical concepts in this book as it is a really great example of simple computation being applied in interesting, engaging, and creative fashions. The designers from LUST and Reas make a great combination as not only is the content of the book interesting, but the design of the book is a treat to look at.
The source code also given in this book is wonderful for beginners to start understanding how actual code can be applied.

Absolutely great book, full of inspiring examples and explanations. The briefs are long enough to captivate interest, but short enough to not bore the reader with unnecessary information. There's even quite a bit of modern art history within the book, which was great to see. On top of it all, there are sample codes available for download online, making this book an excellent buy.
