Fascinating But Flawed 2011/2/19

Years ago I read a book by Jerry Izenberg about the history of the NFL Championship games and I always wanted to see another title in this genre.

I was excited when I saw this new book and downloaded it immediately.

My verdict: a mixed bag

Pros:

I love that there is a small chapter for each of the games and that the statistics for the game, the lineups and the prize money is given for each game.

I love the coverage of the four AAFC championship games as well as the NFL championship games.

I love the details given for the weather and field conditions for each game; remember, these games were all played in December mostly in cold weather cities at a time when domed stadiums were unknown! So many times weather was a decisive factor in the outcomes of these games.

There is much material I had never seen before and the author seems to have done a great deal of research on each game.

Cons:

There are an ENORMOUS number of spelling, grammatical and proofreading mistakes! It was very off putting to me

I would rather have had a big picture description of each game; so many chapters come down to descriptions of each play in a given drive which sometimes strikes me as a mechanical re telling of events.

The author has a clumsy writing style which sometimes makes his prose clunky and irritating to read.

The price is way too high! $19 for a Kindle download? Please!

Having said these things I loved reading this book and I am very willing to give the author a five star rating for his next edition of this book when he has corrected all of the typographical errors and perhaps spent a little time punching up his writing style.

Despite its flaws this book is a must read if you are a fan of early NFL history.
1926 Championship Choices 2012/2/6

I admit at the outset that I bought the book looking forward to the author's coverage of the 1926 NFL Championship - since my father was a rookie with the Frankford Yellow Jackets that year and second in the scoring stats for the team. So I was disappointed that the author ignored the actual NFL championship game where the Yellow Jackets defeated the Bears at Shibe Park in Philadelphia and covered two games in the Grange/Pyle AFL - one on a Thanksgiving double bill at Yankee Stadium with a high school game. This AFL lasted one season before going under. Then the author covers a game where the 7th place NFL NY Giants crushed the "champion" of the Grange/Pyle league 31 to 0 before 5,000 fans at the Polo Grounds - a meaningless game and certainly not the championship.
could not put it down 2012/1/20

I love the history of the NFL, so my opinion may be a bit biased. I couldn't put this down and still continue to re read specific years. While the author is not the most compelling word spinner, for historical football nuts this is a gem. What modern football fan would have thought that Detroit, Cleveland and Los Angeles dominated the 50's. I just wish he would have continued the series to 1970, he missed out on at some great games - a couple that dramatically set the stage for AFL upsets in the Super bowl. A fun read.
