The Fog of War, the movie that finally won Errol Morris the best documentary Oscar, is a spellbinder. Morris interviews Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and finds a uniquely unsettling viewpoint on much of 20th-century American history. Employing a ton of archival material, including LBJ's fascinating taped conversations from the Oval Office, Morris probes the reasons behind the U.S. commitment to the Vietnam War--and finds a depressingly inconsistent policy. McNamara himself emerges as--well, not exactly apologetic, but clearly haunted by the what-ifs of Vietnam. He also mulls the bombing of Japan in World War II and the Cuban Missile Crisis, raising more questions than he answers. The Fog of War has the usual inexorable Morris momentum, aided by an uneasy Philip Glass score. This movie provides a glimpse inside government. It also encourages skepticism about same. --Robert Horton

The Fog of War DVD piles on 24 additional scenes (38 minutes total). They're short and random, but those interested in the film will find it worthwhile to hear McNamara discuss what it was like to work with JFK and who he feels was ultimately responsible for Vietnam. There's also a text-only list entitled "Robert S. McNamara's 10 Lessons," which he introduces by saying that the 11 lessons in the movie were not his own. Some of them, however, are not that different (movie lesson no. 1: "Empathize with your enemy." McNamara lesson no. 9: "If we are to deal effectively with terrorists around the globe, we must develop a sense of empathy--I don't mean 'sympathy,' but rather 'understanding'--to counter their attacks on us and the Western world."). --David Horiuchi

あぁ．．．おい！日本人！マイケル・ムーアなんぞをチヤホヤしている暇があったら今年のアカデミー・長編ドキュメンタリー賞に輝いた本作品を見るべし！明日のヘッドラインを追いかける去年の勝者ではなく、その先を見据えよう。
とにかくマクナマラ爺さんの本音炸裂。日本本土大空襲、キューバ危機、そしてベトナム戦争の当事者、しかもキューバ・ベトナムにはアメリカ国防省長官という地位にあった人間が、アメリカと世界の将来の為に自分が行った過ち、罪、非道のすべてを洗いざらいぶちまけて、直接素直にスクリーンに語りかける。迫力十分です。特にベトナム戦争に関して、今世紀なって当時のベトコン指導者に会った時の話は感動的。「オレタチは冷戦を戦っていると思っていた。彼らは独立戦争を戦っていたんだ。なんてこった。この基本的な認識の差が多くのアメリカ人兵士と数え切れないベトナム人を死に追いやったんだ！」
太平洋戦争時に世に出たアメリカン・エリートの最後。つまりよきにつけ悪しきにつけ世界帝国アメリカを真剣に捉え、それの創立に貢献し、その運営にかかわってきたマクナマラ。その彼が世界の将来を憂えて直言。傾聴しましょう。
ちなみにアメリカでは本作品にあわせた学校での授業ガイドも売られています。日本の教育現場もこうした佳作をどんどん授業に取り入れるべきでしょうね。

This was an excellent, informative and well balanced inquiring into the mind of Robert S. McNamara.
There are many plusses to this documentary. One of course is to see a different insider’s view of history. Another is we get a feel for what McNamara is really like as a human being instead of a news item. We even get an “If I had it to do all over” scenario.
I was especially interested in the Vietnam era as I was there in 67-68 and at the time did not pay attention to the big picture. It makes you wonder what we will find out about today tomorrow.
Aside from the interesting history and different views of the actual decisions of the time, is that the presentation wand in a more chronological order, instead of a bunch of sound bites pouncing back and forth between different narrators, jumbling the timeline in the process.
This is a good addition to your library and can prove useful for future generations.

DVD版「マクナマラ回顧録」です。冷戦終了まで生き延びた、第二次大戦、キューバ危機、ベトナム戦争の当事者だからこそできる貴重な考察です。彼の最後のメッセージを私達は胸に刻まなければなりません。「戦争はあまりに複雑で、分析に多大な時間とエネルギーを要する。従って私達の犯した失敗経験を若い人に引き継いでもらわなければならない。」というものです。このようにマクナマラは自分を超えた何かのために忠実であろうとしてきました。当時も今も。
