With an aesthetic found on the streets (literally, as a graffiti writer and sign painter), and influenced by such great artists as Chris Ware and Ken Lum, Steve Powers has painted a neighborhood of petty criminals, pettier crimes, and a superhero who’s a couple steps away from saving the day. Sharp, funny, and clever, First & Fifteenth features brief urban stories that shrewdly straddle the line between graphic novel and work of art. With a nod to the concrete roots of graffiti and sign painting, Powers skillfully combines word and image to produce a new and unique vision in modern art. Powers’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums internationally, and First & Fifteenth confirms his arrival as an exciting and talented new artist.
著者について
Steve Powers was born and raised in Philadelphia. In 1994 he moved to New York City, where he published On the Go magazine, authored the book The Art of Getting Over, and wrote enough graffiti to get a six-count felony indictment courtesy of the People of New York. After copping a plea and serving five days of community service, Powers started his studio practice in 1998. Since then he has shown at Deitch Projects, the 49th Venice Biennale, the Luggage Store, and the 2002 Liverpool Biennial. Powers was commissioned to create artwork for the Teen Health Center of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, which was dedicated in October 2002. In 2004 he worked with Creative Time on the Dreamland Artist Club, a project that featured twenty artists painting signs and rides in New York’s fabled Coney Island. He lives and works in Manhattan.
anyone familar with powers work over the past 10 years has come to expect some fiendishly genius work and this book is more of the same. the paintings have a fantastic sense of space and color and the stories take us into a urban fantasy/reality where the super heroes need a hug and the scam artists ply their trades.
