A woman in need of family to pay her father's bills agrees to sleep with an anonymous rich man, and supply him with a child. She is forbidden to ever meet the child, but years later, tracks them down, and poses as a governess. Everything about this movie is beautiful, not least Sophie Marceau. She is absolutely luminous here, and her characteris a tough, intelligent woman who knows she does not deserve to be treated the way she is. She and Stephen Dillane have wonderful chemistry, which is crucial. The story moves along steadily, like snow melting and dripping, and ends just as you would want it to.
