Giving to people in developing countries and promoting charities that do likewise has been a passion of mine for the past 10 years. So, when I picked up a copy of Finding Duong, Finding Myself, I thought I'd be able to read about Robyn's journey through her life, her heart and our world from the comfort of a spectator seat. I'd read many stories of people 'finding themselves' through the act of compassion towards our fellow human beings.
Wow, was I in for a surprise!
Robyn's captivating story drew me in to a place where I couldn't read on without reflection of my own journey, my own beliefs, my own life. Much, much more than a simple travel memoir, in Finding Duong, Finding Myself Robyn asks herself some very tough questions. Questions it's difficult to simply turn the page on without some self-reflection.
In the book, Robyn seems satisfied to also leave some questions unanswered. Just as she easily explores the countries she travels, meeting strangers and connecting with their hearts, so does she explore her own inner landscape - meeting her own 'selves' - be they friendly or otherwise, getting to know who she is with every turn into a dusty village street and every turn of the page in this fascinating, heartwarming and oft times tragic book.
I believe Robyn has written a one-off. I haven't picked up another book like it. Perhaps that makes it a marketing nightmare - trying to fit it into one genre. Is it a travel story - yes, a biography - certainly, a spiritual guide - for me, yes.
I encourage you to take the leap, out of the spectator seat and into the game. Take the journey with Robyn in Finding Duong, Finding Myself. I'm sure you'll find it as rewarding an experience as I have.
