Michael Benson is a widely published writer and award-winning film-maker. His book Beyond: Visions of the Interplanetary Probes (Abrams) is currently in print in five languages. The LA Times called Beyond "a spectacular melding of science and art". Benson has contributed articles to the New York Times (Op-Ed), The Washington Post, The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, Smithsonian, Artforum and Rolling Stone, among other publications. His 1996 film Predictions of Fire won the National Film Board of Canada Best Documentary Feature award in 1996.

見開きの写真がいくつも入っており、すごい迫力です。書店で中身はパラパラと見てはいたのですが、じっくり見てると、やはりその迫力、美しさに圧倒されます。値段が高めなので洋書の方を選択しました。ハッブルの写真集が多いような気がします。説明文が決して多い訳ではありません。読もうと思えば好きな人であれば読めます。私は、色んなところでハッブルが撮影した写真を見たり、記事を読んだりしているので、別段説明文を読まなくても写真の内容は分かっていますので不便ではありません。圧巻は、M31と天の川。見開きの大型写真です。このような大型天体写真集を初めて購入する人は、やはり日本語版をお勧めします。値段だけの価値はあると思います。”BEYOND”の続編みたいに説明されていますが、明らかに前作を凌駕しています。

When being outside under the starry sky isn't practical, browsing through this book is more than an adequate substitute for the real thing. I'd considered buying National Geographics' book about the accomplishments of the Hubble telescope, but after comparing it to this book, I was absolutely taken with the quality of the writing, the fabulous illustrations, and the especially the quality of the paper and printing.

One of the most beautiful astronomy books ever

This book is full of page after page of jaw-droppingly gorgeous images of our universe. What's better, they are accompanied by text and close-ups that clarify what we are seeing and put them in context. There is no better photographic tour of the skies; it's the kind of book you'll want to return to again and again.
