キャロル・キングと言えば、「つづれおり」と言うくらい、そのアルバムはＳＳＷ（シンガーソングライター）の最高傑作アルバムとして彼女の代表作になっているが、自分としては彼女の最高傑作アルバムはこの「ファンタジー」だ！メリサ・マンチェスターの「ＤＯＮ’Ｔ　ＣＲＹ　ＯＵＴ　ＬＯＵＤ」と並び、白人女性アーティストのニューソウル路線アルバムとして、自分の７０年代名盤となっている。７０年代のニューソウルを代表するアーティストのダニー・ハザウェイとリオン・ウェア-の二人が、この二つのアルバムに大いに影響を与えている事は言うまでもない！キャロルの「ファンタジー」はダニー・ハザウェイから大いに影響を受けていた時期に発表したアルバムだったし、メリサのアルバムの方はリオンがプロデュースしたアルバムだった。アルバム「ファンタジー」は、当時のキャロルの夫であったチャールズ・ラーキーのウッドベースとキャロルのピアノで始まる１曲目のジャズっぽいサウンドに、ハーヴェイ・メイソンのドラムと、これぞ！デヴィッド・Ｔ！と言う、デヴィッド・Ｔ・ウォーカーのギター、そして女性パーカッショニストのボビー･ホールのパーカッションが絡んで来てソウルフルな展開になって行く中で、このアルバムにどんどん引きずり込まれて行く！サウンドはソウルフルな洗練されたものなのだが、詞の内容は人間性をテーマにしたアルバムだけあって、人種問題や戦争、愛を取り上げたシリアスな作品ばかりであった。アルバム「ファンタジー」は全ての楽曲、アレンジ、そしてバック・ミュージシャンの演奏、どれをとってもみなとても素晴らしく、キャロルの声も活き活きしていた。トム・スコット、アーニー・ワッツ、チャック・フィンリー等のホーン・セクション陣のホーン・アレンジとストリングス・アレンジもキャロル自らしているが、トータル・アルバムとして、この「ファンタジー」はキャロルが最も力を注いだアルバムだと思うし、彼女もきっとこのアルバムが自分の最高傑作と思っているに違いないアルバムだと思う

当時、キャロル・キングがダニー・ハザウェイのレコードを配ったという話は有名ですが、その影響が多く出ています。お気に入りは6曲目Weekdays。「午前中子供が学校に行った後、コーヒーの香りが部屋に漂って．．．」というような件が歌詞にあり、家庭の温かさを感じることができます。ほのぼの感たっぷりです。

ブルーアイドソウルとでもいうのであろうか、キャロル・キングのソウルな面を堪能できるアルバム。これが期待以上の出来です。彼女にはアーシーな優しい素朴な世界観を期待してしまいますが、本作のようなスウィートソウルも素敵です。繰り返し繰り返し聞くことにより、アルバムの世界観を体感できます。
