Album Details

Norah has taken a new direction on the The Fall, experimenting with different sounds and a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits and Modest Mouse. Jones enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River's Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partners Jesse Harris & Richard Julian. Musicians include drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer). The first single/video is for the album's lead track 'Chasing Pirates'.

グラミー賞大小９回受賞の大歌手ノラ・ジョーンズ。
この人、グラミー賞を初受賞した１ｓｔアルバムはブルー・ノートレーベルだったからか癒し系のジャズ・シンガーソングライターと信じられてようで、事実これまで３枚のアルバムはハンサムバンドをバックにビアノの弾き語り一辺倒だった。
内気なお嬢さんアーチストなせいか、義理堅いといおうか、それが聞き手にややもするとマンネリと映った。ノラは声質がビリー・ホリディに通じるものがあり、アメリカ人好みの天才歌手だと思う。
受賞前の下積み時代に「ニューヨーク・シティ」というアルバムでは、リズムの乗りが心地よいクラブ・ジャズ系の歌をのびのびと歌っていたのを知っているので「あのノラはどうなった」と心配していた次第。
４枚目のリーダーアルバムとなる本作は、バンドを一新、自身もエレクトニックビアノを弾いて、若さのある楽しい音楽になった。かれこれ１０年間のマンネリから完全脱皮したわけだ。とにかく今回はバンドがいい。
ノラはもちろんジャズも歌うが、ポップもこなす幅広い歌手。かつて歌ったプレスリーのカバー曲なんか多くの人を魅了したはずだ。ブルース・カントリー歌手、ボニー・レイットとの競演もよかった。
本作トップ曲の「チェーシング・パレーツ」は久々の大ヒットになる可能性あり。ロック色の濃い７曲目（ライブ１曲目）の「イッツ・ゴナ・ビー」はエコーの効いた声にスピード感があって現代的。
ＹＯＵＴＵＢＥのデビット・レターマンのショーに出演しているビデオでは、スパッと切った部分染め茶髪や、少し集めの化粧に変え、「へえ、ノラはこんなに綺麗だったんだ」と感じさせる変身振り。お洒落で、歌に専念するこんな姿を期待していた。
まあこの人は天才歌手だからあわてなくても廃れる心配はないんですが・・・愛聴盤になるのは必至です。

どちらか言うと、ブルース・ジャズ・シンガー「ノラ・ジョーンズ」の色が濃かったのが今までであった。今作品では、がらりと趣を変えた感じである。特にJacquire Kingがproducer and engineeとして参加したことが大きく影響しているようだ。サウンドは都会的で、とても洗練されており落着いた印象を強く与えてくれている。＃８は短いナンバーながら、新生ノラ・ジョーンズを端的に表したハイセンスな仕上がりになっており素晴らしい。歌は非常に魅力的かつ上手いシンガーだが、さらにその歌に磨きがかかり幅も出てきたように思えた。誰からも馴染みやすく、それでいて心に沁みこんでくるような音楽を見事に創り上げている。文句なく☆５つである。
