商品の説明

From Publishers Weekly

Vandenburgh makes a brilliant debut with this startlingly idiosyncratic, intelligent, funny and painfully moving novel. In Southern California in the late '50s and early '60s, Charlotte, daughter of wackily schizophrenic Katrinka, struggles in the toils of family madness for a normal life. When Katrinka repairs to mental hospital, Charlotte stays with her stodgy, repressive and yet crazily eccentric Republican grandparents, who provide little more fertile ground to flourish than did Katrinka, who, for all her charm and energizing wit, is surpassingly wretched as a mother. When Katrinka enters into a brief, improbable marriage, Charlotte is schlepped along to live an unkempt, disordered life in blue collar Redondo Beach and then, gypsy-like, in an Airstream mobile home while her mother works as a circus ventriloquist. With consummate artistry and by subtle indirection, the talented author reveals courage, misery and despair through sharp, flip dialogue, evoking the reader's empathy.

Book Description

Finally back in print, Jane Vandenburgh's "brilliant debut-startlingly idiosyncratic, intelligent, funny, and painfully moving"
-Publishers Weekly

It's southern California in the early Sixties, and Charlotte is a teenager, which is bad enough. She also has strange grandparents, with whom she lives, a schizophrenic ventriloquist alcoholic mother who appears and disappears regularly from her life, and only vague information about the father who died before Charlotte was born.

With so much craziness in the family, Charlotte figures, whether it's "nature" or "nurture," she's doomed. In Failure to Zigzag, Jane Vandenburgh gracefully zigzags between hilarity and sorrow as she recounts Charlotte's attempts to grow up and to practice "sanity as a form of revenge."

An amazing read... 2004/10/19
By Michael F - (Amazon.com)
形式:ペーパーバック
I though this book was amazing. It is one of my favorite stories of all time. The entangled story of Charlotte, her mother, and the family is truly intriguing. I had the honor to have Jane as a creative writing teacher at George Washington University. Her depth as a person and an author is shown in this book wholeheartedly. I would recommend it to anyone who did not grow up "the perfect American life," which pretty much applies to everyone. Buy it, Read it, Love it!

A Schizophrenic Mother and Her Daughter - A GREAT Book 2009/5/5
By Bonnie Brody - (Amazon.com)
形式:ペーパーバック
This is one of the BEST, most beautiful and real books that I have ever read. I plan to re-read this book every few years, something I do with very few books.

Katrinka, a schizophrenic mom, and her daughter Charlotte, make for a deeply connected magnetic pair. They have both the magnetic pull and push. The language of schizophrenia is caught in its most sublime and poetic manner. Vandenburgh catches both the humor and despair of Katrinka. The grandparents, Lionel and Winnie, are portrayed an mean-spirited and almost evil at times, yet they try.

The fate of family interconnectedness is always present. Charlotte seeks to find out the truth about her father's 'disappearance' prior to her birth. Katrinka can remember the order of the clothing she put in the wash twenty years ago yet can not remember the chronology of significant events.

The mentally ill are portrayed with respect and compassion and in a very real way. This is an amazingly wonderful book.

Maybe it's me..... 2006/1/23
By Bronx Girl - (Amazon.com)
形式:ペーパーバック
Like many people, I gave Jane Vandenburgh a try because of Anne Lamott's recommendation. It was not for me. I agree with the other reviewer who said it was too hard to follow, and I usually read difficult books as a former English major. I must admit I checked this out of the library and could not finish it, it's rare for me to abandon a book once I start reading it, but I couldn't force myself to get through it. Life is too short and I have too many other books in my "to be read" pile. In this pile right now, also from the library, is "The Physics of Sunset", also by Vandenburgh. We'll see if I like that any better, the 2 stars in my review is because the author can definitely write.
