かの有名な田山花袋『蒲団』を「男の片想いの文学」と位置づけた小谷野敦を受けて、明治生まれの日本人と、アメリカの日本文学研究者の「片想い」が、妻視点の『蒲団』ともに描かれています。情けない男の恋の三重奏。逆に、女性は生き生きしています。明治生まれの男を介護する若い女は美術家を目指し、アメリカ人文学者の元カノの女子学生はちょっと頭が弱かったはずなのにマスコミを目指し、そして『蒲団』の女弟子は新しい女性を目指す。『蒲団』では名前も与えられていない妻を主人公にした「蒲団の打ち直し」という小説内小説の存在を考えても、「女性を主役に」というフェミニズムの文脈に忠実な、政治的に正しい「文学」の書き直しです。
ただ、少し文章がくどいこと（同じことを繰返すこと）と、書き直すことによって「文学」が生き延びていくことへの無自覚が気になります。だって『蒲団』読まれてないですから。すべての女性がみんな自覚的に成長を遂げるというのもハッピーすぎるようです。おもしろいからいいですが。

「蒲団の打ち直し」の時雄と美穂が、何故か似ても似つかないのに、ほぼ団塊世代の両親のように思えてならなかった…。笑。
この小説みたいに、田山花袋の「蒲団」が書かれた時代と今の時代って、価値観が急激に変わっているまっただ中にいるという点で、意外とシンクロしているのかもしれない。

4.0 out of 5 stars 「蒲団」はある程度普遍的真実を表現しているのでは？, 2008/4/28
　田山花袋「蒲団」は，名のみ有名で今となっては誰も読まないが・・・という文脈で語られている。が，文学全集的なものには必ず収録されており，私も，高校のころ読んだ記憶がある。中年の男が，若い女の子の前で格好をつけては見るが，実際にはあられもなく翻弄され，捨てられて泣く・・・という，非常に分かりやすいストーリーであり，読んでいて面白い作品だった。
　こういう悲喜劇は，何も明治時代の自然主義者だけの身の上に起こることではなく，常にあり得る話なのではなかろうか。だからこそ，情けない竹中先生を妻の視点で描きなおした「蒲団の打ち直し」は決して古さを感じさせないし，その著者であるデイブ・マッコーリーやウメキチじいちゃんを巡る現代における「三角関係」も，リアリティを感じさせる内容に仕上がっている。

　現代における事件進行と，挿話的に挿入される「蒲団の打ち直し」の関係が当初は読み取りにくいが，中盤からは全然違和感なくグイグイと読まされた。
