雑誌「アニメージュ」1989−1990に連載されたエッセイ。
ニコルさんが信州の飯綱にアファンの森（ここでは、まだアファンアル　イイズナ）を作り出した頃の話や日本の森の荒廃を熱く語る。今から20年前のエッセイであるが、果たして日本は変わったのだろうか？もちろんアファンの森は素晴らしい森に成長し、多くの人たちが訪れるときく。そしてどうして日本人は森を憎むのだろうか？とつぶやく。
本書の前に「TREE」（CWニコル、宮崎駿）が同書店より出ている。
備忘録的に
ニコルさんは沖縄海洋博でカナダ館副館長をしていて、その時にコンラッド・ロレンツの講演を聞いたのだそうだ。それは大きい事を理解するためには、まず小さい事を理解するということ、それを水槽の中生物の話で説明したと。
日本人は同じ種類の「木」で「森」が出来るという発想のせいなのだろうか。（日本が先進国で最も森林保護が遅れている理由の一つとして）
手入れをされず放置された針葉樹植林地があるにも関わらず天然の森林を伐採して針葉樹を植える（知床の問題を指していると思われる）
森の価値は木の値段だけではない、山菜、蜂蜜、木の実、プライスレスの人類への利益。

自然保護活動で有名なC.W.ニコル氏の黒姫にある自らが名づけたアファン・アル・イイズナという森の8年間の再生の記録を中心に、フィンランド、フィリピン、ニュージーランド等の外国で直接目にした自然環境と人間とのかかわり方をわかり易い文章で紹介しています。
