Exploring Translation Theories presents a comprehensive analysis of the key traditional and contemporary paradigms of translation theory.
The book builds on Western theories of translation, starting with a survey of the classical twentieth-century linguistic approaches before moving on to more recent models such as cultural translation. The book closes with a survey of the way translation is used as a model in postmodern cultural studies and sociologies, extending the scope beyond traditional Western notions.
Each chapter includes a wealth of material for readers, including key concepts, an introduction outlining the main points, illustrative examples with translations, a chapter summary, and discussion points and exercises.
Exploring Translation Theories uses numerous examples from a range of languages, although knowledge of no language other than English is assumed. Anthony Pym is Professor and Director of postgraduate programmes in Translation and Intercultural Studies at Rovira i Virgili University in, Tarragona, Spain. He is also a member of the International Advisory Board for the Translation Studies journal.

This book is a must for any student in Translation Studies ( although i won't say it is a must for practicing translators who aren't interested in the theory behind the practice !). First of all , and as the writer himself mentions in the introduction, this book is a critical overview of theories in the field of translation. Having read Munday's Introducing Translation Studies I can see how this book is different in that it is not a mere survey of Translation theories ( and who has done what) but rather a critical overview of what has been done so far in the field. Theories are grouped into different paradigms, which helps deepen one's understanding of them. As a student I am familiar now with core texts and core theories in the field as well as prominent scholars and researchers. Personally , I have experienced a (paradigm shift) and many (aha!) moments, and my understanding of what constitutes a translation has been completely transformed. Highly recommended.

I have read this book through like 3 times now. It really is a "tour de force" of translation theory and takes you through what you need to know - in understandable fashion - of translation theory. I have a degree in translation from a big German university and studied a lot of applied linguistics, but after reading this book, felt like I had a new education in my field. I can't praise it enough. Very, very intelligent, readable book on translation theory. If you get one book on this subject, this is it.
