   ビバップ~ハード・バップ時代のジャズ・ピアノは、右手でメロディを弾き、左手でコードを押さえるバド・パウエルのスタイルが基本形だった。しかし、ビル・エヴァンスは両手を自在に使い、マイルスが夢中になったモード・ジャズをピアノに移植、それまで聴かれなかったような斬新な演奏を行った。
   また、パウエル型のトリオでは、ベーシストとドラマーは主役のピアニストをサポートする脇役にすぎなかったが、59年に結成したエヴァンスのトリオ（ベースはスコット・ラファロ、ドラムスはポール・モチアン）は、3者が対等の関係でインタープレイを行った。
   エヴァンスのトリオは、何もかもが新しかった。その最初の成果を記録した作品が59年録音の『ポートレイト・イン・ジャズ』。本作は同じコンセプトによる61年の作品で、「ナーディス」「ハウ・ディープ・イズ・ジ・オーシャン」といった人気曲も演奏しており、エヴァンス・トリオのすばらしさを満喫できる名作だ。3人が互いのアイディアを交換しながら進めていく緊密な演奏が、スリリングであり感動的。（市川正二）

星を１０個与えても惜しくない最高の名盤である。
ラファロ、モチアンとの４部作の中で、比較的軽く見られているのは、冴えないジャケットや取っ付きにくいアルバムタイトルのためではないかと思うが、残念なことだ。「ポートレイト・イン・ジャズ」にまだ見られたやや堅い感じが失せ、より完成度の高いアルバムに仕上がっている。

印象的なテーマの「イスラエル」、バラード美の極みというべき「ホーンティッド・ハート」、哀愁の「ビューティフル・ラヴ」、そして「ナルディス」と、これでもかとばかり名曲名演が続く。アドリブのメロディが素晴らしくよく歌い、いつ聴いてもうっとりと聴き惚れてしまう。名盤「ワルツ・フォー・デビー」のように、心地よい甘味と高い芸術性を兼ね備え、初心者にも薦められるエバンスの最高傑作だ。

ビル・エヴァンスの残した音楽が大好きでよく聴いています。アルバムごとに奏でられる魅力が違っていますので、どれを聴いても慈しみたいような美しい演奏が沢山あります。

「イスラエル」「魅せられし心」「ビューティフル・ラヴ」「エルザ」「ナーディス」という曲の配列がいいですね。緩急の組み合わせと3人の持ち味を生かした演奏がこのアルバムの良さでもあり、高い完成度を誇っています。オリジナルには収録されなかった最後の「ボーイ・ネクスト・ドア」もオススメです。

ビル・エヴァンスの全篇を通じて奏でられる抒情溢れるピアノは、他のアルバムにもましてデリケートですし、研ぎ澄まされた感性が繊細で美しすぎるほどです。ビル・エヴァンスのリリカルなピアノに、雄弁にからむ対位法的なメロディ・ラインを構築していくスコット・ラファロのインタープレイが秀逸です。

音楽的には、一定のコード進行の展開を決めながらも各人がそれぞれの呼吸を読むが如く絡んでいく様は、即興芸術とも言えるアド・リヴの極致とも言えるプレイを随所で聴くことができます。ポール・モチアンもソロ部分になると完成度が落ちますが、トリオでの役割をとても理解しながら巧みなブラッシュワークをいれ、音楽を引き締めています。

スタンダードな曲を、まるでビル・エヴァンス・トリオのオリジナル曲のように自家薬籠中のものとして奏でられたこれらの曲を聴くことができる喜びに浸ってください。ステキなジャズとの幸せな出会いを感じて・・・・。

選曲も曲順も考えられてる。
序曲「Israel」は只タダ美しく、目を閉じ聴き入ってしまう『何も考えたくない』って感じ。
Milesの[Birth of the Cool]では気にも留めなかった曲なのに。

2002年【○○○三世】作曲者である某氏のLiveで初生演奏「Beautiful Love」に感激、
翌年も演奏したし氏も好きみたい。続く「Elsa」もイイっ、愛奏曲になるのワカル。

そして必殺「Nardis」。初聴きの時は特に何も感じなかったのに、聴く程好きになる。
Miles先生が『Evansの為に』書いたらしく、確かに自作で演ってナイ。

日本人が最も好きな[〜Debby]の様な甘〜い感じとは違う孤高な世界、コレこそBill Evans。
4部作の中で地味な位置なのは、ジャケ損してるとしか思えナイ。
