The simplest thing would be to describe Everything Is Illuminated, Jonathan Safran Foer's accomplished debut, as a novel about the Holocaust. It is, but that really fails to do justice to the sheer ambition of this book. The main story is a grimly familiar one. A young Jewish American--who just happens to be called Jonathan Safran Foer--travels to the Ukraine in the hope of finding the woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazis. He is aided in his search by Alex Perchov, a nave Ukrainian translator, Alex's grandfather (also called Alex), and a flatulent mongrel dog named Sammy Davis Jr. Jr. On their journey through Eastern Europe's obliterated landscape they unearth facts about the Nazi atrocities and the extent of Ukrainian complicity that have implications for Perchov as well as Safran Foer. This narrative is not, however, recounted from (the character) Jonathan Safran Foer's perspective. It is relayed through a series of letters that Alex sends to Foer. These are written in the kind of broken Russo-English normally reserved for Bond villains or Latka from Taxi. Interspersed between these letters are fragments of a novel by Safran Foer--a wonderfully imagined, almost magical realist, account of life in the shtetl before the Nazis destroyed it. These are in turn commented on by Alex, creating an additional metafictional angle to the tale.
If all this sounds a little daunting, don't be put off; Safran Foer is an extremely funny as well as intelligent writer who combines some of the best Jewish folk yarns since Isaac Bashevis Singer with a quite heartbreaking meditation on love, friendship, and loss. --Travis Elborough, Amazon.co.uk

交互に語られる構成になっている。
この本の特筆するべきところはまず、ユーモラスな文体だろう。アレックスが操る

めぐってのやりとりや、ベジタリアンのジョナサンに対するウクライナの人々の反応
（本当に、ソーセージも食べないの？）など、笑いながら物語の力にひきつけられて、

現地通訳の大学生Alexとガイド兼運転手役の祖父、祖父の盲導犬（！）として同乗する犬Sammy Davis Jr. Jr.。
この３人＋１匹が、今や地図上から消えてしまった町Trachimbrodを探す話。
Jonathanが語るTrachimbrodを舞台にした彼の先祖の物語、その原稿を読んだAlexからJonathanに宛てた手紙、そしてAlexが語る彼らの道中記、という３つのパートが交互に語られる構成です。
最初は、小難しい単語を間違って使うAlexのめちゃくちゃ英語に振り回されて（え、こんな意味あったの？みたいな感じで）辞書引きまくり。
しかし、例えば「眠る」をmanufacture Z's、workをtoilなどと表現するAlex語が分かってくると、比較的楽に読めます。
しかしそれでも、従来の小説作法とは一線を画した、従って従来のアメリカ文学を読みなれた身には読みにくい英語であることは、最後まで変わらなかったです。
お話の前半は、ベジタリアンなユダヤ系アメリカ人と無邪気なウクライナ人たちの会話のすれ違いなど、カルチャーギャップに大笑い。
後半の虐殺シーンの再現はかなり暗く、そしてラストは、なんだか観念的な終わり方で、いまいち腑に落ちない感じでした。
でも、若い作者が書いた長編第一作ということで、まあこんなものかな？

It has all the elements of being a mess - it's difficult to read, it has a strange chopping between literary styles, a degree of pretentiousness, running jokes about farting that repeat ad nauseum without being funny.But it isn't awful. It's profoundly moving. In particular, I found the last 100 pages to be the most affecting thing I have read in fiction this year, and his use of 'stream of consciousness' at the moment of highest emotional drama (a technique which seldom seems to work in books for me) is awesome in its power and effect. This book is not for everyone perhaps, but I ended up applauding Safran Foer's courageous abandonment of the usual conventions of novel narrative structure. Abandoning the normal formulae, it exposes a raw and real emotion nerve, which - by the end of the book - he had exploited to the full! I'd also recommend reading Tino Georgiou's bestselling novel--The Fates--if you haven't yet!
