Not a Step-by-Step Guide, but Well-Rearched in Alternative Investments 2011/7/28
By Massiel Caceres - (Amazon.com)
形式:ハードカバー|Amazon Vine™ レビュー (詳しくはこちら)
I was hoping to find another "get rich quick" book that really was 'get quick rich', but the first few pages flatly warn you that the book offers no alternative investment strategies, no alternative stocks to look for in the future, no explanations of what your portfolio should look like when you're young versus when you're old in investing alternative stocks/investments/businesses, which next alternative investment "bubble" to avoid, etc.

This book is more of a historical book on what the most savvy of all investors look for when they invest. basically the smartest of the smartest of investors don't follow hunches or rely on the opinions of others, but they spend hours upon hours researching topics and following historical data trends in order to seek out a small window of investor opportunity. As a result, this book is more on the "higher end" of what is like to invest, and something most readers will probably overlook in their search for the next "get rich quick" books (which I am guilty of as well).

This book is divided roughly into three parts with each part consisting of roughly three or four chapters each. The theme of the book is the mutability of populations and their effects on national economies (and related fiscal health and soundness), biological resources and environmental resources and whatever opportunity there might be to invest in these areas. It is more data and analyze of previous data and not really anything about any future investment opportunity. the reason for this I believe is because the author wants to inspire you to find your own window of opportunity, by us doing the research as well, and finding investment opportunities that might benefit the globe, rather than just our own pockets. Investments such eco-sound energy, etc.

It is a very well-researched book. However if you are looking for a step-by-step guide, you wont find it here. You might however find a push to find your own great next alternative investment.

An Interesting Mix of Topics 2011/7/7
By Gregory McMahan - (Amazon.com)
形式:ハードカバー|Amazon Vine™ レビュー (詳しくはこちら)
The esoteric investor was a very enjoyable read. The book itself was not too long, and although I did feel that some of the topics could have been expanded a bit more (such as his treatment of the interplay between insurance and demographic trends, particularly the aging societies of Japan and the Western World), the author's treatment of each was adequate, given that his goal was to produce a book with a more introductory pitch. Each topic was introduced, defined and explained fully, and the examples of each concept presented were more than adequate (again, I would have liked to have seen more examples).

The author organized the book into three parts (with each part consisting of roughly three or four chapters each), with the basic theme of the mutability of populations and their effects on national economies (and related fiscal health and soundness), biological resources (in this case, fisheries- tuna fisheries to be specific) and environmental resources ( the author chose the world's water resources) running through each. Arguably, Bhuyan could have expanded each of these three (3) seemingly different topics into a separate, stand-alone book. Throughout the book, the reader encounters crisp, clear writing and very well-crafted graphs and tables that bring the major points and concepts of the book home.

Those new to the topics of demography, actuarial science and population biology/environmental science will find this very interesting reading. Of special interest to investors looking to profit from demographic trends and looming environmental problems such as confrontations over diminishing water resources are the author's insights, interspersed throughout the text, that tell the reader where to invest- and most important, where NOT to invest.

Overall, the book really piqued my interest in the subject of demography as well as in the plight of the world's water resources (and ways to invest in it, per Chapter 10 of the book). I also feel that the incorporation of end notes at the end of each chapter and a comprehensive bibliography added much value to an already outstanding text. Admittedly, I expected to read just another high-sounding, pontificating, futuristic tome a la Dent or Toffler, but this book surprised me with its eloquence, brevity and insights, and I am already hard at work trying to find ways to put the concepts of The Esoteric Investor to good- and hopefully profitable- use.
Interesting alternative investment strategies to supplement a well diversified portfolio. 2011/10/26

This book presents readers with some viable, alternative investments to consider; specifically world demographics/aging populations, Bluefin tuna, and fresh water. The author, Bhuyan (founder and chief investment officer of a financial investment firm), and contributing authors, Ellis(marine conservationist) and Shaefer(professor of global and security studies/wealth manager) are highly experienced and well versed in their respective fields.

In the introduction, a disclaimer clearly states what this book is NOT: a step by step guide book to making quick money on specific investments. Rather, the authors utilize thorough research, statistical data, charts, graphs, etc. to present their cases for considering demographics, tuna, and fresh water as viable investments. This book is not for all investors! As a healthcare provider and conservationist, I do find the demographics and statistical data quite interesting while everyday readers/investors may find the scientific data rather drab.

Conclusion: this book does NOT cater to all readers/investors but rather those who have interests in the world's aging demographics, nature/conservation, and a resource more precious than gold for human survival: water. No specific companies are named for investing; the authors only provides a good starting point for readers who may want to pursue further research on their own to find companies/instruments to take advantage of the information presented.
