   ブライアン・イーノが1970年代に作りだしたアンビエント・ミュージックは、その後、実につまらない曲が数多く作られてきたので、実際はこのジャンルが彩りに満ちた音楽だと思い出すことが難しい場合もある。そしてミスター・イーノが生みだしたクリックでできあがる不明瞭な音は、現代のコンピュータ・ソフトウエアでしか作りだすしかないこともある一方で、このアルバムは1975年のみずみずしくのどかで優れた『Evening Star』の再現となっている。このデュオはやり残したことを、物憂げな恵みの曲を集めたこのふさわしいタイトルのアルバムで実現させている。たとえばクランキー・レーベルがリリースしているような現代のアンビエント・ミュージックのファンはもう少し“あいまいにやっていい”と思うかもしれない。しかし、他のジャンル（たとえばブルーグラス）と同じレベルでアンビエント・ミュージックを見つめれば、このアルバムはこのジャンルの創始者（たとえばビル・モンローやラルフ・スタンレー）の作品を聞いているようなもので、夕陽を見ながら裏手のポーチで静かにジャムしているようなものである。そして本作品に欠点を見つけることは難しく、意識して気取りを省いた出来のいい作品となっている。（Mike McGonigal, Amazon.com）

　単独リリースには至らずベスト盤「The Essential Fripp & Eno」に収録となった幻の（そして幻で良かった）第３回を含めると、４度目のコラボレーションとなるFripp&Eno。

　余談ながら、ポップミュージックの世界に、それまで近代美術で使われてきた「コラボレーション」という概念を初めて取り入れたのが、そちら方面の教育も受けていたイーノであり、このFripp&Enoはその最初のコラボレーションだと思います。S&GとかCSN&Yとかありますけどこれらはあくまでもバンドですし。

　タイトル「Equatorial Stars」を見ると第２弾「Evening Star」路線かと思いましたが、ギターの多重録音によってキラキラした印象を与えるあちらとは少々異なる感触です。

　一曲目でこのコラボレーションの基本的路線が大体示されています。フリップの作った長短様々なループをバックに、フリップが伸びやか且つ自由にギターのソロを緩やかに繰り広げる、そんな感じです。フリップのソロは流石、単調にならず常に異なる旋律を奏で続け、曲に良い緊張感を与えています。

　そんなわけで今回のコラボレーション、両者とも個人的には「枯れた人」との印象があってあまり期待していなかったのですが、なかなかの成功作だと思います。

最近はｆｒｉｐｐのチェックをしていませんでしたがこのユニットが復活するとは思いませんでした。３０年前のユニットと比べるとフリッパトロ二クスの音もかなり枯れています。ｅｎｏはどちらかというと「on land」系の音。でもかなり角が取れていて自然です。宇宙の普遍性を表現しているようでまさにアンビエント。続編も永遠に続くことを期待したい。

キング・クリムゾンのリーダーであり
ギタリストのロバート・フリップと
元ロキシー・ミュージック、
アンビエントの始祖、
ノー・ニューヨークの仕掛け人
ブライアン・イーノとのコラボ・ユニット。

1975年のEvening Star以来
30年ぶりとなる二人の共演である。

「赤道の星」と名付けられた本作。

驚くほど肩の力の入っていない
それでいて素晴らしく美しい作品だ。

実験的な試みを繰り返してきた二人が
そのプレイの質で描き出す
壮大なサウンド・スケープ。

ナイーブかつクリア、
伸びやかななトーンをつま弾く
フリップのギター。
静寂からやってくる
イーノが操るアンビエントなエレメンツ。
それらが高次元で出偶い
壮大な天球に光を放つ。

その光は1等星や2等星だけではなく
3等星から5等星まであり
ほのかに光りつつ揺らぎ
天空のハーモニーを奏でる。

まるで闇の中で
天球の中間に位置し
その光の一つひとつを愛でるかのようだ。

そのスピリチュアルなアプローチは
天を抜け、
神話の世界に
繋がっているような想いがする。
