内容紹介

Edward Steichen was already a famous painter and photographer in America and abroad when, in early 1923, he was offered the most prestigious position in photography's commercial domain: that of chief photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair.Over the next fifteen years, Steichen would produce a body of work of unequaled brilliance, dramatizing and glamorizing contemporary culture and its achievers in politics, literature, film, sport, dance, theater, opera, and the world of high fashion. Here are iconic images of Gloria Swanson, Gary Cooper, Greta Garbo, and Charlie Chaplin as well as numerous other celebrities drawn from an archive of more than two thousand original prints. Until now, no more than a handful have been exhibited or published in book form. The photographs of the 1920s and 1930s represent the high point in Steichen's career and are among the most striking creations of twentieth-century photography.

Outstanding! 2009/4/4

This is an outstanding book, and really shows how Steichen contributed so much to what we think of as fashion and glamor photography. The reproduction of the photos is excellent. Because these photos originally appeared in magazines, I would bet that they look better here than they did in those original publications. There's not a lot of text, but what there is is certainly informative and interesting. Highly recommended!

Magnificent photos, outstanding reproduction quality (quadro-tone).
The articles are informative and short, as it should be.
It is extremely interesting what the one of the best pictorialist of the world (may be the best one) could do in fashion. Highly recommended!

Truly a beautiful book. I am always looking for high quality coffee table books with large (full page is always best) photographs. I like the text to be minimal, so that the images get a chance to shine in their own right. This book provides a wealth of images in a page after page format and the essays are short and easy to flip past. The pictures are almost full page, in that they have a slight white border and space beneath for a caption. The gallery style of presentation is very satisfying, though the book does leave you wanting more. With books such as these, the term "lavishly illustrated" seems to be bandied around to an almost comical extent. I always get a bit worried when I see a description like that because my idea of "lavishly illustrated" is not a few small to average sized images in the corner of a page full of text (with an occasional full pager to justify it all), no matter how stunning or rare those images may be. But I think it is safe to say this is "lavishly illustrated"!
