The Pretenderの流れを汲んだガツンと激しいアルバムを期待してると、
ちょっと物足りなく感じるかもしれない作品です。
激しさを前面に押し出したオルタナティブロックでは無く、
全体的に押し引きはっきりさせた聴かせるロックアルバムになってます。

前半5曲目までの流れは最高。
激しさと聴かせる魅力に溢れてます。
その中でも圧倒的に＃1・The Pretenderが際立ってますけど。笑

対して後半、ちょっとテンポを落とした感じ。
＃9でインスト入れたりと、他、聴かせる曲が入ります。
エンディングの＃12・Homeのメロディは心に染み入るような曲で、グッと来るものが。
ただ全体的なバランスで言うならOne By Oneの方が良いです。

ボーナストラックの＃13・Once & For Allはポップなハードロック、
そして＃14・Sedaはしみじみとした曲で、ある意味しっとりとラストを飾るのにふさわしい楽曲です。

新譜発売前のｲﾝﾀﾋﾞｭｰで

ﾃﾞｲﾌﾞが「俺は美しいという事を恐れない」
と、やけに声高に叫んでいて
どういう事かと思って新譜を聴いてみた。

ﾌｰﾌｧｲの新作はﾄﾞﾗｲﾌﾞの効いた定番Rockから
前作(ｲﾝ･ﾕｱ･ｵﾅｰ)のｱｺｰｽﾃｨｯｸ・ｻｲﾄﾞの流れの曲
そしてﾃﾞｲﾌﾞ初挑戦のﾋﾟｱﾉによる寡作まで、
今ﾌｰﾌｧｲに期待しているﾌｧﾝの最大公約数的な
ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑになっている。

間違いなく素晴らしいｱﾙﾊﾞﾑではある一方、
総花で優等生的な曲のﾗｲﾝﾅｯﾌﾟが
やや物足りないと感じる向きもあるかもしれない。

では個人的にはどうかと言えば
「傑作」というより「意欲作」として☆☆☆したい。
ﾌｰﾌｧｲの新天地は「ｲﾝ･ﾕｱ･ｵﾅｰ」のｱｺｰｽﾃｨｯｸｻｲﾄﾞではなく、
そのﾗｲﾌﾞ版である「ｽｷﾝ･ｱﾝﾄﾞ･ﾎﾞｰﾝ」にあった。

これまで「どﾃﾞｶｸ」、「ﾊｰﾄﾞ」に、「激しく」やる事が
ﾒｯｾｰｼﾞの有効な伝達方法だと信じていたﾃﾞｲﾌﾞが、
「ｼﾝﾌﾟﾙ」に、「ささやく様」に、「奥行を持って」
伝える事の伝わり（ﾘｰﾁ性）に気づき、確信したのである。

これまでが「音圧」であれば、本作で「音響」による
ｱﾌﾟﾛｰﾁを「発見」した記念すべき作品であったのだ。

今回、ﾃﾞｲﾌﾞはこの手法を一段と進めるべく
ｽﾀｼﾞｵ版でそれに挑戦している。

曲の多くが前半部分にｱｺｰｽﾃｨｯｸｻｳﾝﾄﾞを入れ、
少しひっかかる、つぶやくようなﾎﾞｰｶﾙを重ねている。
そして後半にはいつもの「超絶」ｻｳﾝﾄﾞに昇華していく、と
そういった展開である。

ﾃﾞｲﾌﾞの声質は普通に歌うとｷﾞﾀｰと混ざりやすく
ありふれた声に聞こえてしまうのだが、
この「つぶやき歌唱法＋ｱｺｰｽﾃｨｯｸｻｳﾝﾄﾞ」だと、
奥行が出、かつﾗｲﾌﾞ感が上がり
結果として曲の鮮度がとても高まって聴こえてくる。

この偶然の発見による手法が上手く曲化しているのは
「Let it die」や「Come Alive」等である。
また本人も納得の「Home」は、これからのﾌｰﾌｧﾝのｱﾝｺｰﾙ
1曲目の定番になるのに違いない。

考えるにこのｱﾙﾊﾞﾑはﾃﾞｲﾌﾞのｺﾝｻｰﾄで今一番やりたい
ｾｯﾄﾘｽﾄなのだ。
そしてこれは、かつてﾃﾞｲﾌﾞが見たRockの原風景であり、
その写し画をすることを「良し」とする勇気が、「美しい

ものを美しい」と言い切る今のﾃﾞｲﾌﾞにはあるのだ、と思う。

ここ数年、アコースティック・サウンドへの接近やアメリカという側面へのシフトが強かったフーファイターズ。
今作はそうした意味での総決算になるような作風に仕上がっている。
先行シングルになったプリテンダースは強弱法を使ったフーファイ印のロックナンバー。
アメリカン・ロックの太さと湿ったメロディががっしり組み合った楽曲だ。

歌詞もさらにあらゆることを想起させる内容になっている。
プリテンダースとは「わかったふり、しらないふりをする」という意味があるが、これは現在のアメリカの状況を反映しているようにも取れなくもない。
王道を行く彼らだからこそ、ギミックなしで勝負するという姿勢がありありと見える。

現在のアメリカのロックシーンはなんたらエモというようなティーンズ・ロック
モデストマウスやスプーンのようなＵＳインディロック
そしてブライトアイズのような新世代型ＳＳＷの３勢力に分かれているわけだが
フーファイターズはそのどこにも従属せず、ただひたすら自分の音だけを鳴らしている。
今回の粗く、アメリカーナ的な作風もそうした孤高さゆえに生まれたものかもしれない。
個人的には昨年のパールジャムの傑作アルバムを思わせる唯我独尊さである。

この混沌とした状況だからこそ彼らの王道をいくロックンロールが重要になる。
周りの状況に目も振らず、デイブ・グロールが自分と向き合った作品である。
