Although
Leftfield's
Leftism may take the title of best album by a British dance artist, the third LP from Underworld was a sublime collage of lush textures and insistent beats which displayed the kind of dynamic ambition which has made their live shows so exciting. The daft-yet-heartfelt vocals of Karl Hyde drift amongst Rick Smith's controlled guitar and Darren Emerson's mesmerising drum patters, an intoxicating blend on tracks such as "Mmm...Skyscraper", "I Love You" and "Cowgirl". "Tongue", meanwhile, shows a gentler, warmer side to the band, as Hyde's tones wrap themselves lovingly around subtle chords, while the lush melodies and uplifiting ambience of "M.E." provide a worthy finale. The rarest of things: a varied, emotional dance album that doesn't sacrifice authenticity for innovation. --Ed Potton
