   しゃれたスーツを着て「Addicted to Love」のMTVのビデオで女性陣を引き連れていた時期でしか、ロバート・パーマーのことを知らないなら、時代を代表する非凡なボーカリストを見逃したことになるかも知れない。

   ロバート・ジョンソンのトリビュート盤『Hellhound On My Trail』に自らが提供したトラックと、フェイ・ダナウェイがテネシー・ウィリアムズの戯曲『黄色い鳥』を脚色した映画に触発されて、パーマーはこのフル・アルバムを発表した。収録曲の大半はあら削りなブルースで、わずかに「Stella」では愛すべきレゲエが少々聴ける。

   イギリスの白人少年がブルースを歌うというぞっとするようなスタイルが、ロック界で最も忘れられない、そしてしばしば退屈なお決まりのパターンのひとつになったとすれば、パーマーもまた、その悲しいくらい過小評価されてきた変幻自在のボーカル・センスで、ブルースのスタンダードナンバーや変わり種の曲や最近の曲を集めた本作を輝かせている。その入り込みっぷりは、映画『タクシー・ドライバー』でトラビス・ビックル役を演じるデニーロを彷彿させる。「Hound Dog」のカヴァーは、エルヴィス・プレスリー版よりもビッグ・ママ・ソーントン版に近く、Z･Z･トップの「TV Dinners」とケヴ・モの「Am I Wrong?」のカヴァーは、余分な音を削ぎ落とした泥くさいデルタ・ブルースの哀歌だ。「Crazy Cajun Cake Walk Band」とリトル・ウィリー・ジョンの「I Need Your Love So Bad」のカヴァーには、粘りつくようなグルーヴがあり、聴きごたえがある。

5年ぶりの新作はブルースを中心に、
トロピカルな得意の民俗音楽風な数曲ども織り込まれた
聴き応えたっぷりな傑作です。

最近は主にクリエーターとしての面や、
「おしゃれ」で「洗練された」雰囲気などイメージが強調されすぎていた嫌いがありましたが、
これは奥深いアメリカ南部の泥臭ささえ感じさせる

素朴で力強い歌声が惜しげもなく披露されています。
間違いなく代表作となる強烈なアルバムです。

少々残念なのはＵＫ盤より４曲少ないことです。
（"29 Ways (To My Baby's Door)","It Hurts Me Too","Stupid Cupid","Milk Cow's Calf Blues"）
特に聞き物の"29 Ways"（ウィリー・ディクソンのカバー）が入っていないのは痛いです。

実に5年ぶり、の新作。
昨年5月に録音済みとの情報があったものの追加録音etc.でさらに1年待たされました。
が、待った甲斐ありました。
すばらしい歌声が堪能できます。
今回は全編ブルース、です。
1曲目"Mama Talk To Your Daughter"から惜しげもなくパワー全開です。
「最近のRobert Palmerは興味ないね」とおっしゃる通の方！

初期3部作をこよなく愛する方！是非聴いてください。
今度は失望させません
是非日本盤も発売して欲しいです。
たくさんの人に聴いて欲しい価値ある作品ですから．．．。

彼には、まだまだ頑張ってほしかった。
死んでしまったなんて、嘘だと言ってほしい…。
こんなにすごい人はいない！。
正直、日本では「ザ・パワースティション」以外はあまり知名度無いが、
ソロの作品はすばらしい曲がいっぱいあります。

亡くなられたのは〜2003年9月26日
休暇で訪れていたパリ。
心臓麻痺、享年54歳。

私自身彼の死を知ったのは、恥ずかしながら半年経過した後・・・。
聞いたときは言葉も出ませんでした・・・。

泥臭いR&Bに始まり〜ブルー・アイド・ソウル〜ニュー・ウェーヴ〜テクノ〜ハード・ロック〜へヴィメタ〜スタンダード〜ジャズ・・・・・・あらゆるジャンルを飲み込み続け、
このアルバムで”原点回帰”のごとく、また、R&Bに戻ってきた。

彼ほどのキャリアとポジションであれば、よくありがちな芸術家気取りの、
仙人にもなれたはず・・・。
でもそんな誘惑にも脇目も振らず、まさに、音楽、歌う事を楽しむ人だ。
こんな言葉が聞こえてきそう・・・。
「能書きなんて要らないよ！。まずは楽しもうぜ！」って・・・。
逆に言えば、その境地に達するまでは、想像以上の苦労と葛藤があったはず。
でもそんな姿を見せない彼も凄い！。

まさにこれからが楽しみだった人なのに・・・。残念無念。
一番悔しいのは、ロバート自身に違いない。
