イギリス音楽、特にエルガーは得意技、名匠マーク・エルダ―が、ポール・グローヴス、ブリン・ターフェルら豪華歌手陣を迎えての、気合いの入った、名演。死の淵にある主人公、ひとりの人間が、神と天使、悪魔との対話、葛藤、最期は、救済と諦観で天国へ迎えられる様を描いた、ユニークで崇高、深淵、ある意味残酷だが美しい普遍的オラトリオ、エルガーの代表的名作。ハレ管は初演も行っていて、バルビローリ以来のの伝統と自負もあり、慈愛に満ち優しく見事。マーラーの９番や、シュトラウスの「死と変容」に通ずる作品。エルダ―は、バルビローリ以来のハレ管、黄金時代を作りつつある、と言うのも納得の丁寧な名演。
