Renowned worldwide for his playful, innovative storytelling and humorous, distinctive art style, Akira Toriyama burst onto the manga scene in 1980 with the wildly popular Dr. Slump. His hit series Dragon Ball (published in the U.S. as Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z) ran from 1984 to 1995 in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. He is also known for his design work on video games such as Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Tobal No. 1 and, most recently, Blue Dragon. His recent manga works include COWA!, Kajika, Sand Land, Neko Majin, and a children's book, Toccio the Angel. He lives with his family in Japan.

I was really excited when I read from the earlier review that this set contained the whole Dragon Ball series uncut, but alas it is still cut. The cuts are minor in some volumes, but being someone who wants to collect Manga in their original form, I was disappointed to find out that these issues still had some cuts.
If you're someone who doesn't mind the cuts, then I highly recommend this box set. But to those that are looking for the unedited versions of dragon ball, I recommend looking for the earlier issues printed by Viz. Until then, I am going to replace the volumes with the most cuts with their earlier editions. I just hope Viz come to their senses and release Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z uncut for the hardcore fans.

A Dragonball fan's treasure (for the serious)

I, being a serious Dragonball fan of the telivision since I was a kid, have never actually owned a single manga of the series. With the arrival of this box set, the wish to owning all the mangas came true. To note for readers, the mangas in this box set are not the special VIZBIG editions that have recently come out, but the older versions that came out in the past. Another note is that the box is BIG, so if you buy this, be ready to have a large shelf for it. I won't review about the series, but will review instead about the box set itself. As I said, the box is big, but it is also gorgeously decorated with artwork from the series all the way around (in full color, as the manga series is not in color). Another thing you'll notice is the suitcase-like handle on the top of the box that allows you to carry it around (since it is heavy), which is a nice touch to this lavish box set. The coolest feature on the box set is the panel you open on the front to acces your manga books inside. The makers of this box set obviously made this to be a collector's item for Dragonball fans, and I think they did a brilliant job on it. Another thing you'll notice is the loose long color strip on the panel that shows the characters of the series. You don't need to keep this picture, because all that can be done with it is to line it with the other slip of the Dragonball Z box set to get a complete picture of nearly all the dragonball characters. Is this item worth its price? Yes, as you get all the mangas of the Dragonball series (1-16), a color fold-out poster, and booklet of the series, and is a treat for all fans alike.

A Nice Package and a Great Value.

Many people know about dragonball z but not many people know about dragonball the prequel to dragonball z. In this box set you get the entire 16 volume series at a great price. Considering that each volume costs 7.99 not counting shipping and handling buying each one of the volumes would cost you almost twice as much as buying them all together here, not to mention of course that Amazon has discounted this item even further then the list price. The books themselves are held in a fairly good, sturdy cardboard box. On the outside of the box there is some pretty nice quality images on the outside. There is also a little piece of paper attached to the outside of the box that shows all the little pictures on the individual spines of the book in one long picture. The only thing about the box that irritates me is that you have to remove the cover by pulling apart the top parts of the box to open it and since you have to pull the top with a lot of fore, over time it causes the top part of the box to become bent. There is not much to say about the volumes themselves, it is dragonball in all of it's crude humor and fighting glory. The volumes are nice and high quality the whole outside of each book is laminated. Some other reviewers have mentioned the censorship but, compared with the normal volumes(the volumes sold individually) these volumes in this box set actually have less censorship. Lastly, the box set comes with a small "booklet" of info but it's so thin it's more like a phamphlet the anything else. It contains an interview and some other trivia and information abot dragonball. To make up for this however there is a nice poster of goku and company. All in all this box set is a great value if you don't own most of the volumes and it comes in a nice box to boot too!
