ロバート・Ａ・ハインラインの「夏への扉」、ずいぶん前に日本語で読んだのですが、ストーリーが面白かったことと、何よりも夏の扉を探す猫のピートが印象に残っていました。
今回、知らない単語などはそのままにして、英文で読んでもやはり面白かった。タイム・トラベルの辻褄合わせも楽しめますし、２１世紀の現実との比較も面白い。
真冬のコネチカット州の古い農家で、何処かのドアが夏へ通じているはずだと思っている猫のピートは、ひとつひとつのドアをあけて、外には雪しかないことを確認するまで納得しない。ピートのしゃべる「猫語」とあわせて、我が家の飼い猫と重ねてしまうのは私だけでしょうか。「夏への扉」はタイム・トラベルのメタファでもあるわけです。
山下達郎の同名の曲は、この小説をベースにしているそうです。

ハインラインはＳＦの巨匠として多数の傑作を生み出しているが、青春時代に読んだ本書にはハインラインの瑞々しい感性が溢れており、特別な思い入れがある。今回、旅行のお供として久し振りに再読したが、どうせならと原作に挑戦してみた。英語は口語など一部理解できないところがあったが、基本的には平易な読みやすい文体なので、無事に読み終えることができた。
ストーリーの面白さはやはり抜群で、僕がもっとも好きなリッキーとのキャンプでの会話のシーンには改めてほろりとさせられたが、今回新たに気付いたのは猫のピートの存在感だ。以前読んだ時は主人公のダンがどうなるのかとストーリー展開に気を取られて一気に読んでしまったが、今回じっくり読み返してみると、猫の生態や行動様式や「猫にはユーモアがない」といった感情についてまで記述されており、ハインライン自身も間違いなく猫好きなのだろうと感心した。
また、今回印象的だったのは「未来は現在より間違いなくよくなる」というハインラインの人類の未来に対する明るい確信である。バブルが弾けた以降の日本では高齢化や保険制度の破綻、国の借金増加など将来への不安を掻き立てるような暗い話題ばかりが取り上げられているが、科学技術の進歩が人類に幸福をもたらすということを確信している本書を読むと、現在の自分達は暗い方向ばかりを見すぎているような気がしてくる。

巨匠ロバート・A・ハインラインの傑作で、SFのタイムトラベルもの元祖みたいな作品です。コールドスリープ(冷凍睡眠）で1970年から2000年に行く内容ですが、その未来社会の2000年も既に過ぎ去ってしまったのですね。初めて読んだのは、中学の時なので少し感慨深いです。
ウェルズのタイムマシンに比べれば、文明とか大掛かりな視点はないけれども、70年代の発明家兼技術者の主人公の時間と年齢を超えた恋の成就は、爽やかな印象を残します。とにかく、読後感の良い作品です。ちなみにネコの名前である護民官ペトロニウスは古代ローマの実在の人物なんですね。
