Erich Wolfgang Korngold only wrote music for 19 films and always thought of himself as a "serious" composer, yet although his concert works are now being rediscovered it is for his influence on the cinema that he is best remembered. He defined the swashbuckler with
The Adventures of Robin Hood and
The Sea Hawk and before this release Marco Polo issued new recordings of his scores for
Another Dawn and
Captain Blood.
Devotion was a disastrous version of the story of the Bronte sisters, with Korngold's lush and elegant music the film's only saving grace. Imbued with his innate lyrical sensibility, Korngold composed an enormous range of material, from the playful to the dramatic and intensely heartfelt.
Kings Row remains his masterpiece of melodrama but whatever the film Korngold always wrote to the highest standards and for
Devotion he created another rich and complex romantic work. Immaculately reconstructed by John W. Morgan, this recording brings to life all the subtle details lost in the original 1940s soundtrack, so that really for the first time we have the opportunity to appreciate the breadth of what is in all but name a 70-minute film symphony. Superbly packaged, this release makes a strong addition to any collection of classic film music.
