今回もNew Yorkが舞台ですが、主人公は、コロンビア大学のPiaという女子医学生で、おなじみの監察医のLaurieやJackは後半で少しだけ登場するだけです。
いつもは、医学上の倫理的な問題が背景になっていることが多いのですが、今回はいまひとつテーマが絞れてない印象で、あえて言うなら、生命保険契約の売買、再生医療、発達障害などでしょうか。
犯人は最初からわかっていて、あまり謎解き的な要素はないのですが、Piaが何度も危険な目にあいながら、研究室のボスの死亡事件の謎をといていく過程は、それなりにスリリングで楽しめました。
あえて難を言うなら、事件の動機がややどうかな（今ひとつ意味がわからない）、というところや、犯人たちがなぜか妙にまぬけなところがあるなど、あれ、というところもあるのですが、Piaというキャラクターがなかなかに魅力的で、それらの欠点をカバーしてくれてます。
