In The Subtle Knife, readers are introduced to Will Parry, a young boy living in modern-day Oxford, England. Will is only twelve years old, but he bears the responsibilities of an adult. Following the disappearance of his explorer-father, John Parry, during an expedition in the North, Will became parent, provider and protector to his frail, confused mother. And it's in protecting her that he becomes a murderer, too: he accidentally kills a man who breaks into their home to steal valuable letters written by John Parry. After placing his mother in the care of a kind friend, Will takes those letters and sets off to discover the truth about his father.
The Amber Spyglass brings the intrigue of The Golden Compass and The Subtle Knife to a heartstopping close, marking the third and final volume as the most powerful of the trilogy. Along with the return of Lyra, Will, Mrs. Coulter, Lord Asriel, Dr. Mary Malone, and Iorek Byrnison the armored bear, The Amber Spyglass introduces a host of new characters: the Mulefa, mysterious wheeled creatures with the power to see Dust; Gallivespian Lord Roke, a hand-high spy-master to Lord Asriel; and Metatron, a fierce and mighty angel. And this final volume brings startling revelations, too: the painful price Lyra must pay to walk through the land of the dead, the haunting power of Dr. Malone's amber spyglass, and the names of who will liveand who will diefor love. 全巻通しての感想です。
何と言っても少年ウィルが良かったです。勇気がありなお且つ冷静な判断、そして心の温かさ、威厳すら感じさせる人間としての品格、誇り高さ。彼は姿こそ少年ですが立派な大人の男であり、まさに生まれながらの王者であり、女性としても人間としても惚れずにはいられない存在です。彼は神秘的な力を持つナイフの「持ち手」となりますが、ナイフ自身の運命も彼に委ねられ、彼は自ら選び（本人は選びたくなかった、と何度も心情を吐露しますが）、同時に選ばれた存在となります。
ストーリーはしっかり読ませる構成で、大人が読んでも楽しめると思います。ファンタジーなので、ところどころ「どうして？どうして？」と思ってしまってもそういう設定だから仕方ないか、と納得しなければならないところはありますが、全体としての展開は次はどうなって行くの？と楽しみになるようにできていると思いました。
ただ自分の生活には「神」とか「宗教」はあまり実感としてないので、その辺の理解があると物語の重要度が違って感じられるのかもしれないです。でも、物語としてだけでも十分で、一気に読んでしまったので落ち着いてもう一度読みたくなっています。
英文はそれほど難しくないですが、造語が多数出てくるので読み始め慣れるまでちょっと時間が掛かりました。状況把握できてくると一気読みできます。英語からイメージした多数のファンタジーキャラクターについてはこれからDVDや邦訳を見て答合わせをするのが楽しみです。

Someone once described “His Dark Materials” by Philip Pullman as she gets caught, she escapes, she gets caught again, she escapes again, then she gets caught, then she escapes. This may be true but the real substance of the epic is the how and why.
It is the “how” that holds the story together. We are intrigued with Lyra’s ability to plan and lie her way out of trouble. Eventually it is the truth that sets her free.
The “why” she is being sought and the “why” she must go on brings us many conundrums that we not only face in the tale but also in our real life.
Lyra must fulfill a prophecy; however if she becomes aware of her destiny, that destiny may never happen. For those readers who have read Josef Campbell you will recognize the classic Heroine's Journey where a person coming of age must sacrifice the apron strings and face the challenge of adulthood. This includes going into a dark place and confronting an unknown which usually is ones own fears and ego. From there they are reborn to become a fully functional person in society.
Oh, did I forget to tell you that this is a fun read.
