This is a very well-written and interesting view of France and French society in 1770-1853 -- exciting years, to say the least! -- from a unique point of view. Lucy de la Tour du Pin was born into the aristocracy and survived the French Revolution, Napoleon, several periods of exile in Europe, England and America, restorations of the Bourbon monarchy, etc. etc. near -- though not quite at -- the center of events. This book is made more lively by the interesting digressions, evidently culled from her diaries or from contemporary newspapers, about fashion, popular fads and events, and other period trivia which are carefully sprinkled, never to excess, throughout the text. One could wish for more insight into her husband who is a bit of an enigma, but this is a minor quibble about a book which richly deserves all five stars. A real pleasure to read.
