評価はもちろん、内容に関してです。ニール・ヤングのファンとしては今までのカタログを紙ジャケで(さらにBOXとかオリジナルの帯とかつけて)集めなおしたいところです。同じSHM−CDでもZEPとかStonesとかWhoとかは紙ジャケで出ているのに(特にワーナーはZEPでBOX出してるでしょ)なぜ、ニール・ヤング(とCSN&Y）は紙じゃないんだ？次こそは紙ジャケ、さらにBOX化を希望します。(これも買ってしまうけど…泣)お願いしますよ。

まず、ワーナー発売のロック関連のＳＨＭ−ＣＤ盤はボーナストラックなしも一因かもしれないが例えば某社ジャズ作品と比べて若干廉価ですね。

本作はウェスト・コースト・サウンド史上一つの頂点を極めた傑作と言ってよいだろう。サウンド的には６０年代のウェスト・コースト・サウンド、特にコーラスを中心に据えたフォーク・ロックを総括し、７０年代のイーグルス等に代表されるサウンドへの橋渡しをした意義は大きい。６０年代末〜７０年のヒッピー文化を背景とした「カット・マイ・ヘア」、「僕達の家」、「ウッドストック」といった曲、「キャリー・オン」「ティーチ・ユア・チルドレン」といった忘れ難い名曲もさることながら、やはりニール・ヤングという偉大な個性を持ったミュージシャンの参加が重要。特に「ヘルプレス」は名曲中の名曲。以後ニールのソロ・ステージで幾度となく再演されるが、素晴らしいコーラスをバックにし、初音源化された本作のものが最良のヴァージョンの１つであることは間違いない。私も大好きだ。彼が歌うこの曲と「カントリー・ガール」、そして彼のギターがなかったとしたら本作の雰囲気・影響力は随分違ったものになっただろう。

私は本作をウェスト・コースト・ロックの最高峰とは考えない。しかし、１つの巨峰であり、イーグルス等７０年代に次の頂点を形成するウェスト・コースト・ロックの礎を築いたことは確かである。メンバーがワイルド・ウェストの頃の扮装をして当時を思わせる写真におさまっているジャケットは、イーグルスの２作目「ならず者」にヒントを与えたのでは、と想像するのは私の考えすぎだろうか。

『デジャ・ヴ』は、１９６９年において、すでに終焉を迎えたことが誰の目にも明らかになったアメリカ最後の大衆的変革の試みへの惜別のように思える。
それは、どちらかというとニールヤングらしくない類いのドラマチックでヘビーな構成の中に、未だ夏の熱を残す舗道からかげろうの立ち昇る夕暮れのような静けさをたたえた、『カントリーガール』でしめ括られる。
変革を志願したものたちが一人また一人と”アメリカ”に帰順していく。　しかし、彼らはそれほど傷ついていないし、その表情もまだ完全に絶望や諦念に覆い尽くされている訳では無い。
翌１９７０年５月４日、オハイオ州立ケント大学で自国軍のカンボジア侵攻に抗議する民衆に州兵が襲い掛かり、４人の学生を虐殺する。
人々はわずか１年前にその時期のもっとも誠実な音楽家たちが描いた美しい終わりが、ただ甘い夢に過ぎなかったことを身も蓋も無く思い知らされたのだった。
彼らはその出来事の１０日後に『オハイオ』を録音し、今日に至る。
