Bryan Adamsが，アメリカで全国区のアーティストとなった作品．これの次"Reckless"で世界的にブレークした．これをLPで買って聴いていたとき，おじさんは高校生だった．3曲目"This time"のサビの最後の歌詞，"I'm gonna make her mine"なんてことは，こっぱずかしくて口にできなかった無垢な俺．それが今や「まいうー」とかほざいているデブおやじになってしまった．

'59年生まれのBryan Adamsは，本作のリリース当時で23歳．前作"You want it, you got it"以来，Bruce SpringsteenのアルバムをミックスしていたBob Clearmountainを共同プロデューサに迎え，相棒Jim Vallanceと丹念につくった曲の数々が聴ける．オンタリオ出身の田舎者が，何のひねりもつけず，ストレートにロックしている本作のような作品は，今の作品ではもうめったにお目にかかれない．バラード"Straight from the heart"の歌詞みたいに告白していたら，俺のこれまでの人生に多少の色はついたのだろうか．俺は当時流行ったネクラ男だったわけだが，彼は永遠に俺の心のアニキ，brother in heartである．

"Let him know"で東京の国際音楽祭にエントリして，端にも引っかかんなかったのは意外なエピソード．"This time"ではForeignerのヴォーカル，Lou Grammがバックで参加．骨太ドラムスのMickey Curryは，この後Hall & Oatesのバンドで一躍トップドラマーになった．ギターのKeith Scott，ベースのDave Taylorあたりは，今でも彼の作品に参加する仲間達だ．これを聴くと元気になることうけあい．特に当時本作を聴いていたおっさん方面(偏見)．"The best was yet to come"である．この最後の曲もいいバラードです．

本作はブライアン・アダムスの３作目に当たる。この人、実直な人なんだろうなあーと思う。歌と音楽の姿勢が常に実直。ハイスクールのダンスパーティで演奏していた頃から、基本的な姿勢は変らないんだろうなあ~。気持ちの良い一本勝負の正統派アメリカン・ロックです。参考までにこのアルバムからトラック４のstraight from the heartがヒット！初の全米アルバムチャートトップ１０入りしたアルバムです。

日本語で言うと万年好青年？のブライアン・アダムス。本人には悪いが、歌がすごくうまいとは思わない。ただその愚直なまでの真っ直ぐさと、憂いの感じられるハスキー･ボイスが好きだ。このアルバムも自分の贔屓目なら星５つなのだが、万一だろうが、僕のレビューを見る人の事も考えて４つにした。

　なんと言ってもストレート・フロム・ザ・ハートがいい。ブライアンそのものが感じられる、彼の代表作品だろう。もちろんその他の曲もいいが...特別な思い入れがあるので。人は誰でもストレート・フロム・ザ・ハートでいたい。でもできない...だよなあ。
