In "Custom Knits 2", Wendy takes the techniques one step further, presenting patterns, formulas, tips and tricks for customising any type of knitted garment-for women, men or children. Each chapter in Custom Knits 2 begins with a tutorial and is then followed by a selection of patterns on which to practice what you learned. This book begins with an overview of how to pre-plan a sweater so that you'll know exactly how to customise the pattern. The following chapter covers easy ways to tailor the fit of a sweater, and even add elements like a hood or sleeves. The next chapter teaches knitters how to convert any pattern to a different size. In addition to the techniques, Wendy includes 25 original top-down knitting patterns that can be knit as written, or customised any way the knitter likes. As with the first book, each pattern features specific ideas for customisation and includes call-outs alerting the knitter when she has reached a point in the pattern where she can customize. With the wealth of knowledge this sequel will deliver, "Custom Knits 2" is sure to become a go-to reference and pattern book in many knitters' home libraries.

Wendy Bernard is the author of Custom Knits (STC Craft, 2008) and is well known in the knitting world for her blog, KnitandTonic.net, which has a daily readership of between 4,000 and 7,000 readers; her group on Ravelry.com has nearly 2000 members.

『custom knits』ですっかりWendy Bernardのファンになったので、2冊目も購入。
1冊目と同じように、ネックからとじはぎなしで編む（＝トップダウン）セーターの編み方やパターンが掲載されている。今回新しく加わったのは、子供サイズのパターンを大人用にサイズ変換するにはどうすれば良いか、すそから編む（＝ボトムアップ）のセーターをトップダウンに変換して編むにはどうすれば良いかなど。技法としては参考になるものが多かった。
が、問題は1冊目よりデザインに魅力がないことか。「Ravelry」でちらりと中身を見て、「あれ？ なんだか1冊目より編みたいものが少ないかも」、と危惧したのだが、本が届いてじっくり見てみてもやはり「編みたい」と思うものは2つしかなかった。子供用・男性用・女性用とサイズを変えるだけで編めるパターンが多いため、女性らしいデザインが好きな私にとっては魅力に欠ける、というのが理由。マニッシュなデザインが好きな人にとっては、編みたいパターンが多いのかもしれない。
また技法に関しても、私が知りたいのは'@ピースに分けて編むセットインスリーブのパターンを、とじはぎなしのトップダウンで編む方法、'Aネックシェイプ（トップダウンのパターンは、ボートネックやクルーネックだとネックラインに前後差がないものが多い）の上手な方法、の2つなのだが、どちらについてもいまいち詳しい解説がなく、消化不良に終わった感がある。
とはいえ、分かりやすい英文と端的なパターンで、トップダウンのセーターが編める本としては○。初めて英文パターンを編む人、初めてトップダウンを編む人には適した本だと思う。

"custom knit"の続編。今回もとじはぎなしでセーターが編めます。今回は子供用、メンズ用のセーターの割り出しがちょっと載っています。最後はボレロ、ニット帽などの小物を収録。
全体的に並太程度の毛糸で編まれている作品が多く，日本でもにたようなゲージの毛糸は見つけることが出来ると思います。女性用にはバスト周りの調整方法が巻頭に載っていて、短い段でどう調整するかも載っています。
とはいえ、日本人はアメリカ人の様にビックな体型の人はそういないのでそこまで密に調整する必要はないかもしれません。基本は前作と一緒。どちらかと言うと前作の方が基本の割り出しが細かく描かれているのでお勧めできます。もっと珍しい技法が載っているかと思って期待していたのですが、あまり前作と変わらないので☆４つ。

I have Wendy's first book and totally LOVE it!! I have been waiting anxiously ever since for her second book to arrive.
I love knitting books that empower me as a knitter and this one does just that! Whether it's knowing how to take someone else's pattern that I like and alter it to fit me and tweak it here or there or to be able to take yarn in hand and create something wonderful that fits the way I want it to and looks the way I want to is a skill I feel is essential in the process of being happy with my finished project. Wendy's first book started me off in the right direction. Her second book just loaded me up with many more tips, tricks and techniques to truly make it my own.
I LOVE the top down seamless philosphy of knitting. It just makes so much sense. Custom Knits 2 contains so much information as to why and, more importantly, HOW to take a sweater, turn it on it's head and work from the top down. Wendy even includes information on how to convert a bottom up pieced sweater into a top down seamless sweater!! Something I am sure I will use often!
It is really important to be able to understand what we need to do to get our knits to fit the way we want them to. Otherwise, why even bother knitting garments? No matter how well written a pattern is, there is no such thing as one size fits all. We are all different sizes and even if we have the same measurements around our bodies as the pattern calls for, we might be longer or shorter vertically. Or our bust might match the pattern size, but our hips are a completly different size than the pattern was written for. Wendy takes all this into consideration and gives us the tools we need in this book to be able to make the kinds of changes we want to in our knitting whether we are working from someone else's pattern or coming up with our own. There is also information on how to size patterns up or down, bigger or smaller than what the original pattern gives us. How do we take a childs garment that we love and make it big enough to fit an adult. How do we take an adult sized sweater and make it small enough to fit a child. Or a change a pattern meant to be for a man into something for a woman? or vice versa? It's all here!

Every pattern includes a "make it your own" area that gives ideas on how to tweak and change certain elements, ie add sleeves or subtract them, add a hood, change the neckline, etc, to get creative juices flowing. There really is an umlimited supply of patterns and ideas here!

Where's the errata?

Generally, I'm a fan of top down knitting. But it appears that the "improvisational techniques" billed on the cover are more like convoluted methodology. In her effort to make her top down techniques more innovative, I fear that Wendy Bernard may have gone overboard. When I read the directions for her pattern "Flannel Jacket," I couldn't believe how she managed to so complicate a simple straightforward design by her most bizarre construction. Perhaps, if someone had proofread the pattern, they would have noticed that the directions for the main design element, a seeded rib are wrong and do not produce the ribbing shown in photos of three sweaters of this design. Additionally, the stitch counts listed for the body of the sweater do not fit the seeded rib pattern as printed. The design's pattern would be so much simpler knit (in reverse) on a circular from the bottom up. I started to do that until it became evident that that wouldn't be possible given all the errors.
FYI, the publisher has not yet listed any errata for the book. Too bad, 'cause I would've loved to knit this one for my mom.
This book just reminded me why I always try to borrow knitting books from the library before investing in them. This one will be going back before its due date and I will NOT be investing in it.

Not as good as the first

I loved the first Custom Knit book. I went out and bought it twice when I lost it. This one was very good and the products were fun to look at, but I haven't tried to make any yet, because none of them caught my eye when I flipped through it. There were more than four that I wanted to do right away in the first book.
In short, I like the book, but it isn't my top ten of knitting books.
