タイトルもずばりThe Cure、25年に及ぶキャリアの中で初のセルフタイトル、もちろんベスト盤ではなく、新作。ジャケ写も一瞬、180度路線転換のポップ路線（良く見ると鬱積したような暗さは変わらず）で「あれっ！？」と思った。欧州の老舗有名ブランドが過去数年、拡大を狙って伝統的なデザインを残しながらも、白地にカラフルな昔ながらのロゴを入れたバッグを売り始めた事を思い出した。「一見、斬新に見えるが基本は昔のまま」というあれだ。彼らもまさにそんな感じなのだろうか？彼ら（の曲）を初めてTVで見たのは私が高校生だった1983年頃。デビューして数年経過していたが、パンク~ニューウェイブの先鋭的な存在で、UK音楽好きの評論家には評価が良かったが、日本での人気はJapanやUltravoxに比べ低調だったと記憶している。何故か？やっぱりR.Smithがちょっと変っている感じに見えるからだろう？脳天気な米国のロックグループに比べ、近寄り難い雰囲気があったからだと思う。この点は今でも変わっていない（最近は中年太りで愛嬌が出てきたようにも見える）。不思議なのはどう見ても英国的な彼らが何故か米国で人気が出た点にある。1989年のLove Song（2004年には311がカバー）の大ヒットとアルバムDisintegrationで、米国での人気を不動のものにした。当時も今も曲の雰囲気は変わらず、シングル向けこそかなり聴きやすくアレンジしてあるが、本質は暗く重い。それでも何となく癒された感じがするのはやはりCureだからか。本作も同じだ。シングル｢4｣、「9」あたりは耳馴染みが良いが、他は100%、The Cureの世界。生半可な気持ちでは51分間を聴破することはできない（コアなファンでないと多分頓挫）。彼らの世界に入り込む心構えが必要だ。かく言う私も、Disintegration、Bloodflowersを持っているが、通して聴いたのは数回しかないのだ。でも、本作は今まで以上に聴き込めるかもしれない。既に数回聴き、｢10｣のような曲を通じ、彼らのロックバンドとしての魅力が少し分かったような気がするからである。

ポップな曲からディープな曲まで、いままでと変わりないCureの音ではありますが、今回ライヴレコーディングということもあって、生々しい作品となっています。ロス・ロビンソンと製作したというのは、このレア感を出すためであったのかも知れません。
個人的には"Kiss meＸ３"から聴き始めていたので、それ以降の彼らのイメージからはちょっと意外な雰囲気をもったのですが、もともとはライヴに定評のあるバンドなわけで、そこのところを前面に押し出した印象を受けます。
ロバート・スミス自身が「最高傑作」だと公言していますが、その通りです。
また、このアルバムでCureはライヴバンドであることを改めて認識しました。
