ＣＣＲ自体が意外と当時活躍していた連中がまだ頑張っているのに名前を聞かなくなってしまった。あんまりゴシップ的な話題を作らない地味な存在であったからなお更そうなのかもしれないが。ただ、音は今聞いてもぶっ飛びます。最高です。結局、今から考えると類似バンドはいなかったように思う。孤高のブルース＆スワンプ＆カントリー・シンガーであったジョン・フォガティの世界が繰り広げられています。このアルバムのあといい作品が一杯出ますが、原点はこのアルバムだったのだといつも思います。「アイ・プット・ア・スペル・オン・ユー」をやるためにこのバンドが存在したとさえ思い込んでしまう出来です。

　ＣＣＲは僕が洋楽を聴くことになった重要なグループでした。リアルタイムでは1970年夏の５thの「Cosmos Factory」が発売されたときだったが、全てのアルバムを買って圧倒的なアメリカンロックを味わい尽くさせてもらった。その後域度と無くＣＤは再発されてきたが、魅力的なものは無く我慢をしていた。ところが今回結成40周年（！）記念というメーカーの上手い策略のなかで発売された本シリーズはSHM-CDとなって飛躍的に音質の向上が予想されたことと、ボーナス音源が追加されていることだった。勿論６thまで全て購入した（７thは追加音源無し）。さて、

　本作は1968年7月の１stアルバムである。彼等の音の完成は次作「Bayou Country」ではあるが、過渡期的な仕上がりの本作も３曲のカバー曲が素晴らしいのは皆さん異論は無いだろう。驚くほど良くなりすぎた音に少し違和感も持ってしまったが、迫力満点でこれはこれで素晴らしい企画だ。

　しかし、僕が３回もでんぐり返しをしてしまったのはボーナストラックである。９は前身ゴリウォグス時代のシングル、１０はボ・ディドリーの曲で後の「cosmos Factory」にも収録されたが全く違う演奏。ここまでは良い、普通のボーナストラックだ。さて１１、１２はファンなら垂涎の1969年3月14日Fillmore Westでの貴重なライブ音源だ！。特に１２はオリジナルを越える１１分の熱演で聴いていて失神寸前になった。録音が綺麗なのにも驚いたが、演奏がもの凄く上手いのだ。彼等はシングルヒットを出すだけの柔なロックグループでは無いこと位は十分判っていたが、ここまでしっかり演奏するとは思わなかった。もう降参です。まるでBooker.T,& MG'Sというかアーシーでグルーブ感溢れる泥臭い熱演が続く。

　オイ！そこの若いの、これを聴けって。おじさん達はナ、こういうのを聴いて育ってきたんだぞ。半端じゃないだろ？これを聴けるまで40年も待ってきたんだぞ！

デビュー作にしてすでに、何年もねかせたようなヴィンテージな質感とむせ返るようなＲ＆Ｂ衝動。「ハイウェイを飛ばしているときに大きな声をさけんでる、それが俺のロックンロール衝動さ」と言った、ジョンの面目躍如。未知のジャングルを突き進んで行くようなシンプルこの上ない、リズム隊。そして忘れてはならないのが、トム兄の樽に何十年も寝かせたようなコクのあるウィスキーを思わせるような、リズムギター。「スージーＱ」ではシンプルながらも他のどのバンドにも不可侵なロックの領域をたっぷりと堪能できます。
