Kennedy's prose is sometimes hard to follow, but he relies heavily on interviews from the players. Thus, you really get to know the voice of the players. This I found to be essential to my understanding of the issues these players faced. Thus, Kennedy's style is that of a historical fiction writer. Good stuff.
The big picture: Kennedy's book is the definitive history. There are other books on the subject, but this one is a good starting place for information about one of the most publicly hidden tales of segregation in the history of our country. The book is well documented--provides a great works cited section and bibliography. A good read for casual readers as well as professionals doing research on the subject.
