PHILIPPA MEIN SMITH is Professor of History at the University of Canterbury. She is the author of Maternity in Dispute: New Zealand 19201939 (1986), Mothers and King Baby: Infant Survival and Welfare in an Imperial World: Australia 18801950 (1997) and co-author of A History of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific (2000) and Remaking the Tasman World (2008).

A Little Too Cut and Dry For My Taste

A Concise History of New Zealand is exactly that -- concise. It is an "easy read". The author covers all bases on the history of the human settlement of the archipelago. However, I find Philippa Mein Smith's writing style a bit too cut and dry for my tastes. Certainly, it is not riveting reading as in the case of "The Fatal Shore" the excellent history of the settling of Australia.
