Digital Manipulation Techniques

This book is more of digital manipulation than digital painting. The difference is, here, most of the lessons start with a photo, and then proceed on to turn that into a painting of a certain style, be it watercolour or oil.
If you want to learn to paint by eye, just like a non-digital artist, this book is not for you. It doesn't teach you how to create a colour palette from life, instead it teaches you how to create a colour palette from a photograph. Yes, you can then use that as a reference but the lessons are really on replicating, not creating.
Some of the effects are nice so you could still pick up a few interesting tips. But ultimately, this book is more suitable for those who want to work on photos, or have something to work with in the first place.
The software covered are Photoshop and Painter.

I was a little disappointed with this book. The techniques are all very basic and I did not learn much from it. If you are completely new to digital art and photoshop this book might be a good buy but only if you don't know how to create your own brushes and use layers. A lot of the information is simply how to modify a photograph to make it look like a painting with tools such as cloning and filters.

David Cole is a terrific artist whose book gives lots of ideas, methods and approaches to creating digital painting that truly looks like "natural media" paintings (I won't say "real" because what is shown on these pages IS real; just not real watercolor or oils or whatever, as it is all done digitally). This book is like taking a painting class, so expect to work for your results, but he covers many different processes, and once you've looked through the book I think you could easily pick one medium to pursue and stick with that. It's not "push button" art, and your work won't look like everyone else's. He has been developing his methods and instructions for several years and writes articles for a British digital photo magazine, so his lessons are clear and easy to understand. If you are looking for a book that just shows you which filters to use and which buttons to press, keep looking, but if you really want to learn to paint digitally using all the tools that are out there right now, this is a keeper.
