I didn't see a weapon in the other guy's hand. I didn't want to kill him. For a split second I hesitated. It was snowing. I was soaking and a million miles from home. I was looking at him, he was looking at me. Then, from the back of the trench, came a burst of automatic fire that cut past my head, and I pressed the trigger.
Even by SAS standards Mike Curtis has had a remarkable career. Born and bred in the Welsh valleys, he followed his schoolmates into the coal mines at the age of fifteen. In 1979 he applied to join the Parachute Regiment. Enlisted in 2 Para battalion, he served in Northern Ireland and then went out to the island of South Georgia when the garrison of Royal Marines there was taken captive by Argentinian special forces. He joined the SAS in 1983.
In Close Quarter Battle Curtis describes his gruelling experiences in the Falklands before focusing on two of his major SAS operations: first in Iraq, where he spent forty-two days Scud-busting hundreds of miles behind enemy lines; then in Bosnia, where he worked closely with all factions and later led a close protection team guarding visiting heads of state.

第二空挺としてフォークランドを戦い、その後SASに入隊し湾岸戦争とボスニアを戦った男の自叙伝。いわゆるSASモノの一つかと思って読むと良い意味で裏切られる。SASの基本戦術などについて詳細な記述があり、それらの応用法が著者の実戦の中で説明されている。これらの説明は従来、数多くの既刊「SAS…マニュアル」にも見られないもので、伝説先行のSASという部隊の本質に迫る良書である。

A more mature McNab memoir

After having read the Andy McNab books, I can say that these are far better as they have a more mature writing style while still making the reader feel like they are being spoken to personally. It gives a good insight into the many theatres of operations that Curtis has been into, inclusing the Falklands as a Paratrooper and the Goose Green experience, the Gulf War and the Bosnian UN operation. This book is so intense that I was able read it cover to cover in 3 days while still going to university! Very much a recommended read.

18 years in the British army. 15 in the SAS. Combat in Faulklands. Jungle. Behind lines in Iraq. Bosnia. Dead comrades. Soldiering in the most hostile places on the planet.
Left with a failed marriage, two daughters somewhat estranged, an inadequate pension, and a parasite that will eventually kill him.
From working in the Welsh coal mines as a youngster, all over the world. Jungles. Deserts. Freezing in the Faulklands. Skiing with the Norwegians. UN surveys in Bosnia during the hostilities.
Beautifully written but not much humor. (Humor high point of book: He reports being assigned to a foreign country base on a training mission & being struck by the extraordinary beauty of one of the civilian workers on the base. He checks and finds out that she was hired to be and works as a prostitute.)
The impression given is that the training in the SAS produces about as many casualties as combat. He contrasts the good pay and base conditions - and safety consiousness of US Delta Force with the toughness and mission effectiveness focus of the SAS.

One review stated that this book was on a par with Andy McNab's Bravo Two Zero, I believe this book is far better than that. Once you start it you will not be able to put it down, friends of mine who do not share the same interest as myself in military books, have passed on the same comments. The book tells of a clique of soldiers called 2 Para who had there own culture of aggressive elitism that was put through its paces in the Falklands campaign. And then a move to a unit that is looked open by most fighting forces in the world as one of the most professional and proficient Special Forces in service today. The difference between this book and Bravo Two Zero, is that this book discribes a military career of many actions that were successful in there outcome, not of a patrol that ended in failure. If you want to read about the fighting qualities and professionalism instilled into a British airborne soldier, who then went onto further his career within the SAS, read this book.
