The Third Edition of this popular text focuses on clinical-practice research methods. It is written by clinicians with experience in generating and answering researchable questions about real-world clinical practice and health carethe prevention, treatment, diagnosis, prognosis, and causes of diseases, the measurement of quality of life, and the effects of innovations in health services. The book has a problem-oriented and protocol-based approach and is written at an introductory level, emphasizing key principles and their applications.

1985年の初版から買い続けて第3版となる。著者も題名もあまり変わっていないが、10年以上の間隔をあけた今回の改訂は、内容が大きく変わっている。
EBM的な、研究をどう医療現場に活かすかという視点から、現場の疑問や課題からどう研究を組み立てるかという視点への変更である。しかも、どのように研究の課題「research question」をまとめるかという、一番最初のステップがしっかり記載されている。研究というと、統計やコンピュータ操作に重点が置かれがちだが、そのもう一つ前のステップだ。
この本が、EBMを最初に提唱したカナダマクマスター大学のグループによる本であることはよく知られている。そして、第2版はEBMという言葉が発明される直前に出版されている。そこからのほぼ15年を経てこの内容となったことが興味深い。
しかし、この本に貫かれた現場とそこの患者さんやそこで行われる医療内容に焦点を当てている姿勢は変わらない。

How to organize a clinical trial

This is a well written book dedicated to those clinicians planning a clinical trial or to those interested in this topic.
There is also a section dedicated to diagnostic tests.
Overall the book is well written, easy to read.
After reading this book everybody will feel more confident with these topics, that sometimes seem to be so hard to learn.
In addition, the authors have a very good reputation and exprience in the field of clinical epidemiology.

Clinical epidemiology becaome the mainstream in the era of evidence-based healtg care. These authors all devoted themself to this field in their career. This book demonstrated the advantages and disavantages of methodologies used in clinical research, especillay in randomized controlled trials. Readers can approach modern clinical epidemiology without any complex mathematic formulas. I suggest that every physician or researcher who is intrested in this field should read this book.

Epidemiology not boring

Whenever you heard about epidemiology you think of a dull paper impossible to read. This book is quite different, first it is written by people who actually perform research and use their own research as examples, second they follow a line left by the amazing Dr. Sackett and have learned and possibly improved his skills shown at his famous EBM book. A must if you want to keep being a good doctor.
