Good book about IOS-XR ! 2011/5/29
By Nicolas Michel - (Amazon.com)
形式:ペーパーバック
We can say that not a lot of ppl are in need of IOS XR knowledge. This Code is based on a certain Cisco Line of product as the reviewer above says.

The 4 authors are all CCIE and it shows that the book will really dig into the details for sure :P

The first chapter of the book is very very important because it will explain what is different in IOS XR and where this code is implemented : CRS, 12000, ASR etc etc . The network has evolved and the regular IOS isnt that good to switch packet at higher rate ... The advanced line of product was in need of some newer code : IOS XR.

The first third of the book is oriented on the way IOS XR is written and explain the differents functionnalities of the code, then it will focus on the IGP/BGP and MPLS. If you are reading that book it means that your knowledge into these protocol is good or very good, you just need to understand how the IOS XR is implementing the protocols ... Hence the book :)

The last part of the book is all about the CRS, The key components are discussed to understand the architecture and troubleshooting of a CRS 1 multishelf system

I recommend you to read that book if you are going to work with IOS XR.
Cisco IOS-XR Fundamentals MUST READ 2011/3/24
By FER CCVP CCSP CCDP - (Amazon.com)
形式:ペーパーバック
I was in the need to learn and had a reference book around IOS XR because my daily job activities. Cisco IOS XR FUNDAMENTALS is the right reference guide to learn the foundations for this Cisco Line of product.

It is a book that builds knowledge with the content you will see that the 12 chapter it contains explain from the fundamentals of the software, the fundamentals of the implementation of the IGP protocols, BGP, MPLS, Multicast and SDR.

I cannot stop reiterating that this book is a mandatory field guide for any engineer that works with Cisco IOS XR and a must read to be introduce for the engineer that wants to learn and is starting his career on this line of product.

The author build a book that has a lot of show commands that are very useful to understand all the examples of deployments it shows.

I was expecting a simple topology where all the examples can be build from and follow-up on all the examples, but the topologies and example are very close to a real world implementation.

In general nobody puts their attention on the appendix of a book, sometime you use them sometime no, but I will recommend taking a look at it in order to know the information that is in there, it will probably help you in the future.

One chapter that is very useful to really understand what is the purpose of the book and why its content is the chapter 1 and 2, where you will learn the blueprints for the Cisco IOS XR. In addition chapter 12 helps you understand the architecture of the CR-1 and a lot of fundamentals of the main platform where the Cisco IOS XR was developed.

Cisco IOS XR Fundamentals really points the blueprints around the infrastructure mainly around the network and some parts of the end point, like the servers. When it covers this part it is really sad that the only type of server technology the author points out is the IBM Data Center, probably the justification is that it only talks about the Protocol but I would like to see some other vendors or general endpoints mention like blades, rack mount servers, tower or micro tower servers.

I will recommend the book as a daily personal reference because you can find out concept that will help you on your daily work when you're are designing or deploying infrastructures with Cisco IOS XR in an enterprise or a service provider.

I will suggest the author that for the second edition will need to cover the architecture of all the platforms where Cisco IOS XR is used.

This is a must learn platform because probably all the software around Cisco products will converge in a combination between IOS, NEXUS-OS and IOS-XR.

My rating of the book is a 4, good book for reference.

A Complete Description 2010/1/29
By John Matlock - (Amazon.com)
形式:ペーパーバック
Cisco's IOS (Internetwork Operating System) is the operating system that Cisco has been developing for many years for use in their routers and switches. IOS is a package of routing, switching, internetworking and telecommunications functions tightly integrated with a multitasking operating system. Originally IOS used an integrated kernel, but more recently the new version of Cisco IOS called IOS XR has been released that uses a 3rd party real-time operating system microkernel (QNX). This new kernel offers modularity and memory protection between processes, lightweight threads, pre-emptive scheduling and the ability to independently re-start failed processes.

This book, on the 'Fundamentals' of the operating system is very complete. The first few chapters talk about the basics of the operating system itself including its architecture, infrastructure, installation and the like. The remaining chapters talk more about using the OS. This includes things like security, configuration control, routing and switching.

The book is intended for the individual actively managing a Cisco network and provides a basic understanding and details of its use.
