商品の説明

内容説明

Italian filmmakers have created some of the most magical and moving, violent and controversial films in world cinema. During its twentieth-century heyday, Italy's film industry was second only to Hollywood as a popular film factory, exporting cinematic dreams with multinational casts to the world, ranging across multiple genres. 'Cinema Italiano' is the first book to discuss comprehensively and in depth this Italian cinema, both popular and arthouse. It is illustrated throughout with rare stills and international posters from this revered era in European cinema and reviews over 350 movies. Howard Hughes uncovers this treasure trove of Italian films, from Lucino Visconti's epic 'The Leopard' to the cult superhero movie 'Puma Man'. Dario Argento's bloody 'gialli' thrillers and Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns are explored alongside films of Federico Fellini, Pier Paolo Pasolini and Michelangelo Antonioni. Chapters discuss the rise and fall of genres such as mythological epics, gothic horrors, science fiction, spy films, war movies, costume adventures, zombie films, swashbucklers, political cinema and 'poliziotteschi' crime films. They also trace the directorial careers of Mario Bava, Sergio Corbucci, Francesco Rosi, Lucio Fulci, Duccio Tessari, Enzo G. Castellari, Bernardo Bertolucci and Gillo Pontecorvo.

著者について

Howard Hughes is the author of 'Stagecoach to Tombstone', 'Crime Wave', 'Once Upon a Time in the Italian West', and 'Aim for the Heart: The Films of Clint Eastwood' (all I.B.Tauris), as well as the Kamera guide to 'Spaghetti Westerns'.

Just what I was looking for 2011/9/4
By Dennis M. Roy - (Amazon.com)
形式:ペーパーバック|Amazonが確認した購入
I just got this and have barely cracked it, but what I have read so far has been enlightening, to say the least. Such info as the fact that Barbarella and Diabolik were filmed concurrently, or that Antonio Margheritti's "Gamma-1 Quadrilogy" (War Of The Planets, Wild Wild Planet, War Between the Planets, and Snow Devils) were all filmed in 12 weeks, the first two co-produced by MGM, and were all intended specifically for US television syndication. I wasn't even aware that the Vincent Price film The Last Man on Earth was an Italian-American co-production filmed in Rome.

Covers all the major genres. Great resource for finding other Italian films with the same directors, actors, and score composers. And just enough plot description given for the films you haven't seen to give you an idea whether you would find those particular films interesting and worth seeking out.

Could have used a few more stills from the actual films (although there are plenty of posters and lobby cards), an appendix to alternate titles, and a guide to internet resources and sources for the films on DVD, but other than that, well worth your money.

Genre enthusiasts rejoice! 2012/2/19
By T. Heilman - (Amazon.com)
形式:ペーパーバック
Author Howard Hughes has written a book that fans if Italian cinema will devour. It is by no means fully comprehensive, but how could it be with massive books devoted individual sub-genres like spaghetti westerns and giallos? Instead Hughes focuses on historic benchmarks and little-known gems including short synopsis' and factual tidbits. It is written from the perspective of a cinema lover so you will not find long-winded, pedantic and dull passages written by a dry film-scholar. In short, a fun read!

ANOTHER ABSOLUTE MUST!!! 2011/10/25
By Richard J. Oravitz - (Amazon.com)
形式:ペーパーバック|Amazonが確認した購入
My favorite films of all time, and all genres, usually come from Italy, mostly between the years 1955-1975. Whether they be Sword & Sandal, Spaghetti Westerns, Giallo, War, Horror or just plain European Trash Cinema, these films are mostly slick, action-packed, over the top, and above all, very enjoyable.
And Howard Hughes' current book is indeed a celebration of such films, throwing in a few art films for good taste. Not just for beginners, this book has a lot to offer for all. I've been a fan of these films all the way back to the Sons of Hercules tv package in the early 1960's, and I've found much to like within this book. Yes, it's an overview and covers a lot of territory. But it's also crammed packed with valuable information and does justice to all films covered. Hughes, as with all of his previous books, has given us another absolute must. Every book he has written is one which I wish I could have written. Keep 'em coming.
Highly recommended.
