In Volume 2 of the Chrono Crusade manga we get a little more background information on the main characters. After disappearing for years, Father Remington has uncovered a photo of Rosette's brother Joshua, an apostle who fell into the hands of demons. Of course, Rosette wants to set out immediately to find her beloved brother, but she's part of an organization. She can't just go running off on her own authority. So Remington tells her to focus on training to join the Militia, a more combat-oriented wing of the Magdalan Order which will allow her more freedom to pursue her own private missions. So the Father sets up a Danger Room-like training exercise, with an added addition of an actual demon to test her. The problem is that Azmaria has unknowingly stumbled upon their all-too dangerous practice!
This is a good series, but it can get a little wacky at times. The "soul-diving" scene in which Ghost in the Shell type technology is used, even down to the VR visor is a bit much for 1920s America, and the humor doesn't always work either. The action portrayed here was the highpoint of the anime but hopefully the manga will not fall into the same state of religious hocus pocus in the next volume. The art is great.
