０６年３月のシカゴの通算３０作目「XXX」が全世界発売されたあとに、国内でリイシューされた「１６」「１７」「１８」「１９」「２１」は 若干の音量アップ程度の様子だったみたいですが、
今回のライノが直接リマスター作業を施して１０月に発売した「１６」は、レコードや初期CDでは
ちょっと軽すぎた音が、今回のリマスター盤では重みのある音になっています（特に「Love me tomorrow」！）。
上にクレジットされていないようですが、ボーナス・トラックでビル・チャンプリンの
「Daddy's Favorite Fool」が収録されています（リマスター盤のみなのでご注意！）。

シカゴは７０年代末の低迷を乗り越えて８２年に復活を遂げますが、
その中心軸となったのが、早くからバラード／コンテンポラリー路線での才能を発揮していた
ピーター・セテラ、今作から加入のビル・チャンプリン、そしてAORプロデューサーの旗手
デヴィッド・フォスターです。
フォスターが人気凋落のシカゴの立て直しを請け負った際、旧イメージのブラス・ロックを
すべて払拭する覚悟なら、ということで、メンバーの一線に残りたい思惑と、質の高い楽曲
（外部ライターの曲も初めて導入）が一致、バンドの心機一転を飾る大成功の一枚となりました。
AORというカテゴリーでも、代表的な「Hard to say I'm sorry」バラードのみならず
すべての曲構成と緊張感で、屈指の出来と思います。
しかし、ブラス・ロック時代のイメージのアイコンだったロバート・ラムは、イメージ刷新のために
この三者を立てる形で、当時のPVを見てもわかる通り、しばらく窓際に追いやられることとなりました。
その後ピーターが脱退、バンドは彼の置き土産のような「バラード路線」ばかり
レーベルから要求されて軋轢を起こす結果になり、やがて決裂して９０年代の低迷を迎えることになりました。

８２年発表の１６作目。実質的なリーダー格だったテリー・キャスの死亡後、シカゴは没落と言っても良いほどの低迷を続けていたが、プロデューサーにデヴィッド・フォスターを迎えた本アルバムからの５．の大ヒットで見事に復帰した。その５．はデヴィッド・フォスターとピーター・セテラとの共作であり、プロデュースのみならず演奏、曲作りとほとんどシカゴのメンバーと言って良いほどの大活躍をしている。またフォースター人脈としてＴＯＴＯ周辺のメンバーが参加しているのもヒットの要員だろう。このアルバムのおかけで、音楽専門誌などでは、ちょっとしたフォスター・ブームになっていたことを思い出す。
　はっきり言って従来のシカゴとは別物であり、ブラス・ロックの雄としての彼らの姿はここにはない。ブラスと同レベルで８０年代のシンセサイザーが重用されているなど無骨なロックを求めると完全に肩透かしを食らうし、シンセ並みの扱いを受けているブラスは完全に添え物になっているためシカゴのファンにとっておそらくこのアルバムは「ゴミ」だろう。しかしながらポップスという枠にシカゴというブランドを変型させてここまでの作品に仕上げたフォスターの力量は現代でも評価できるし、８０年代の一つの指標的な作品だとも思う。
　ついでになってしまったが、ビル・チャップリンが本作より正式参加したこともグループのパワー・アップに貢献していることは言うまでもない。

テリー・キャスの不幸な死から、低迷していたシカゴが今までのブラスロックのスタイルを大きく変え、よりポップに、そしてビル・チャンプリンを加えた新たな時代を到来させたともいえる一枚です。大ヒット曲の「Hard to say I'm sorry」（全米第一位）をはじめ、「Love me tomorrow」など今までとまったく違うシカゴの曲が詰まっています。ライノの再発版で音質は大きく向上し、ファンとしてはうれしいですが、「What you're missing」と「Love me tomorrow」がシングルで入ってしまっているのが気になります。注意してください。
