確かにストリングスのアレンジはちょっと、という感じもありますが、ニコの大ファンの私としては別に問題ないです。それは例えばビートルズのアルバム＜LET IT BE>,新ヴァージョンはとてもリアルなビートルズとして感動しましたが、当時リアルタイムで心酔してしまった私としてはやはり、＜LET IT BE>は当時の<LET IT BE>なのです。ニコのこのアルバムもこの音で私の脳裏に焼き付いているわけです。当然の事ながら、60年代の雰囲気が色濃く漂っています。世界が加速度的に変化してゆく時代に放つ冷静沈着な声。まさに異色の存在。彼女の声にはどうしても個としての存在の哀しさ、のようなものを感じて吸い寄せられてしまう。演技で哀しがっている声ではなく、本質的にそうなのだ。だから生理的に受け付けない人がほとんどだとは思いますが、ニコの作品の中ではまだハルモニウムの音が渦巻く前のものなので聴きやすいと思います。私としてはこのアルバムのけだるい雰囲気になぜか＜春＞を感じるので、毎年、思い出しては聴いています。

　ニコといえば、ご存知の通りヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドのファースト（67年3月）で3曲歌いロックの歴史に残った女性です。

　これは1967年10月のニコのソロ・デビュー・アルバムで、ルー・リード、ジョン・ケイル、トム・ウィルソンが参加するなどヴェルヴェッツとの関連の深く、作曲陣にリード、ケイルの他、ディラン、ジャクソン・ブラウン、ティム・ハーディンが参加するなど、素晴らしく豪華です。

　内容は、フルートやストリングスがバック・アップしたフォーク色の強いポップスだというのに、ちっとも爽やかではなく、なんだか孤独感とか怨念とかネガティヴな情念ばかりを感じさせます。とても上手いとはいえないヴォーカルだけど、なんとなく心に残るのは確かですね。沈鬱な気分が伝染するというか。

　ちなみにニコはこのアレンジを「ひどすぎる」と言い、ルーは「フルートやストリングスのアレンジが最悪」「俺やケイルにアレンジをさせればよかったのに」と言ってます。（そうだったら、よかったのに・・・）それでも、なかなか魅力のあるアルバムなのは間違いありません。
　ところでニコは60年代前半は女優兼モデルでしたが、Bill Evansの名盤"Moonbeams"のジャケットの女性がニコだという噂、堂々とSwing Journalに書いてあるけど、あれは本当なのかなぁ？

たとえばどこかの女の子が自分のMySpace Musicを開いて自分の歌を聴かせるとき、決まってニコに影響された、と言うのですね。特にこのアルバム2曲目のThese Daysは若い人の琴線に触れるらしく、St. Vincentをはじめとして今世紀に入ってデビューした人がカバーしています。ジャクソン　ブラウンが書いた曲で彼自身も歌ってる(ちなみにオールマン　ブラザーズも歌ってる）のにニコのカバーと言うのです。「どうぞ私の失敗を責めないで。もうよくわかっているのだから。」という、ある機会を逃した後悔と回想の曲を書いたブラウンは当時16歳。ニコにしても本当に大変なことを経験するのはこの録音の後なのです。ニコのドイツ語なまりの不器用な歌い方が、この歌の解釈をほとんど決めてしまった、とも言えます。アレンジはいろいろいわれていますが、ストリングスとフィンガーピッキングギターに、エレクトリックピアノ（ふつうのピアノじゃなくて）というのは当時としては新しいのです。最近Dirty Projectorsがほとんど引用に近いアレンジの曲を発表しています。
