たとえば、昨日見た夢の細かい内容は忘れちゃったんだけど、なんとなく言葉では、言い表せない『いい感じ』だけは、ぼんやり残っていて、ベッドの中であれはなんだったっけなーって思うことないですか？

レイモンドカーヴァーの作品を読んだ後は、そんな不思議な『いい感じ』が、ぼんやりーと心の中に残ります。なんだこの奇妙な感じは？って思って、読み返してみても、やっぱり、話としては、大事件とかあんまり起きてないんですよね。

「大聖堂」という話が、最高でした。不思議な幸せに、じんわりとうたれます。

（老婆心ながら）アドバイス：各小説の本文のはじめに、村上春樹の解説がちょこっと載ってるのですが、それを読むと、その見方でしか小説が読めなくなってしまうこともあるので、それを!見ないでまず本文を味わったほうがいいかもしれません。その後、解説を読んだほうが、「一粒で２回おいしい」体験ができます。

カーヴァーの作品は短編小説といっても、あらすじといえるあらすじがない。起承転結といえる起承転結がない。日常生活のちょっとした違和感とか異物感とか、非日常性の部分を、ちゃちゃっと切り取って描き出すのが本当に旨い人だと思う。波乱万丈だけが語るべき人のドラマではないと、日常の中にこそドラマは潜んでいるのだと、教えてくれたのはこの人です。村上春樹さんの訳もすばらしい。

いつ見ても最後に何かじーんとくる感覚が残るのが、「ささやかだけれど、役に立つこと」、「僕が電話をかけている場所」、「大聖堂」です。絶望の中で見出せる小さな小さな希望、というのでしょうか。ほんのわずかな手かがりが、死や別れやディス・コミュニケーションに、未来を切り開く大きな可能性を見せてくれます。

それがね、大仰に描かれてないのが、カーヴァーのすばらしいところ。あくまで、日常という人生の一部分なのです。

レイモンド・カーヴァーの秀逸な短編小説をまとめた傑作選．短編以外にもいくつかの詩や，カーヴァーが父親について書いたエッセイなども収められている．「大聖堂」，「ぼくが電話をかけている場所」，「ささやかだけれど役に立つこと」といった短編はもちろんのこと，「使い走り」のようなものも読めて楽しめる一冊だった．カーヴァーの小説は原文を読んでこそ凄さが分かるという人もいますが，村上春樹の訳もまた十二分に楽しめる．
