映画でずっと見てきたためか、００７は映像のほうが面白いと思う。派手な森の中のカーチャエイスで幕があく。映画のシーンを思い浮かべながら、期待を持って読み始めた。セルビアからロンドン、ドバイ、ケープタウンとそれぞれに趣の違う都市を舞台にいつものボンドの大活躍。でも、やっぱり違う。ディーヴァーお得意のどんでん返しもなんとなく色あせて、もう一歩二歩という感じ。
読んでいてワクワク感も少なくて、だらだらとじかんばかりかかってしまった。この本と格闘した私の方が、ボンドより疲れたみたい。

DeaverがBondを復活できたか？Deaverは好きな作家であるが、本作品だけで判断すればBondの粋な部分が表現できていない様な気がした。トリック、お酒、女性等００７シリーズのお決まりの道具は揃っているが、やはりその人物に何か足りないものを感じた。
事件のあらすじは書かないが、Deaverの小説とは違う感じは出ているが、逆にDeaverらしさを感じられない点があり、何れにせよ中途半端な印象を持った。話しの展開自体は面白いが、００７としては？

James Bondが映画でなく小説に再登場！急速に伸びた英国の環境企業が何かおかしい、死体を扱っているとの懸念がある。また、東欧でMI5のエージェントに敵対する動きもある。当環境企業が大量の殺人死体を入手するとの情報があり、ボンドは問題を解決すべく南アフリカ共和国へ出向く。味方か敵かわからない美人が登場、例により食事、ワイン、情事とボンドは、例の如くトラブルに巻き込まれていく・・・・
Deaverファンとしては、Lincoln LimeやSachs巡査長が生き生き動き回る、本来の作品よりもおとなしい印象である。Deaver得意の超どんでん返しも少ししかないのが少し不満である。ハードカバーの英語と毎日格闘、Deaverの佳作に感謝しよう。
