Peter L. Bernstein is President of Peter L. Bernstein, Inc., an investment consultant firm he founded in 1973, after many years of managing billions of dollars in individual and institutional portfolios. Bernstein is also the author of several books on economics and finance, including the bestselling Capital Ideas, Against the Gods: The Remarkable Story of Risk, and The Power of Gold: The History of an Obsession. He has lectured widely throughout the United States and abroad, and has received the highest honors from his peers in the investment profession.

著者のバーンスタインと言えば”Risk"、”Gold"などの金融に絡む概念・物を歴史を振り返りながら語ることで有名な作家であり、本書の前作”Capital Ideas"はマーケットを理解する、マーケットに負けないための現代投資理論の紹介に主眼を置いていたのに対して、本書では現代投資理論へのの行動ファイナンスからの攻撃、現代投資理論の適用例・発展例を機関投資家、アカデミックな世界（彼はEngineersと呼ぶが）で説明し、更にはマーケットに勝つための試みについて語られている。彼の最後の著書となった本書は心なしかかつての執着心が薄れて本の厚みも薄くなったが、現代投資理論の今を概観するにには最適な書であると考える。
