On Call It a Good Deal, his first indie label release, alto saxophonist David Bixler emerges as an urbane, highly accomplished bandleader and composer. In a quintet date of seven original compositions featuring his long-term collaborators, Bixler creatively pushes the envelope of mainstream instrumental jazz with hard grooves, highly inventive instrumental voicings, and a solid sense of swing. Since 1999, Bixler has held the lead alto position in the Chico O巽arrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, performing at the famous Birdland Jazz Club every Sunday night. He has also toured with the orchestras of Tokishi Akiyoshi and Duke Ellington.
