他の方のレビューに、「説明が不十分」「いきなり大量のコードを示して不親切」といった旨のコメントがあったので、フォロー的な意味も含めて書いておきます。
確かに本書は「説明が不十分」で「いきなり大量のコードを示して不親切」であり、入門書としては全く適してません。
「まずなにをすればいいか」「どうすればどうなるのか」については、公式のドキュメント(http://book.cakephp.org/ja)と、CakePHP ポケットリファレンス (Pocket Reference)があれば十分。それでも不十分と思われる向きには、公式？のCakePHP1.2ガイドブックなどが良いと思われます。その上で、実際のクラスメソッド詳細に付いては、公式APIドキュメント(http://api.cakephp.org/classes)やソースコードをあたってみる必要が必ず生じてきます。（これから入門される方にはきつく感じられるかも知れませんが、このプロセスを踏む事でCakePHPを本当の意味で「使いこなす」ことができるようになると思われます。）
本書の意義は、そういったプロセスを経て、一応ひととおりは形となるものが作れるようになった人に、「あくまでもCake標準のコンポーネントや機能を使って」どのように認証やi18n,ACLなどを用いていくか、モデル中心の開発をどのように行っていくか等のエッセンスをちりばめたものであり、「学ぶ」というよりはエッセンスを見つけ出して「自分のものにする」スタンスでよむための本であると思います。
ただ、Scaffoldingを元にアプリケーションを構築していくところには、正直「？？」な部分が否めなかったので星４個としました。

この本は実際にWebアプリを作りながら、cakePHPの使い方を説明する本ですが、
なぜ、説明もなく「このファイルに、これを記述する」という風な文章が多すぎて、
とてもこれからcakePHPを始める人が読める本ではありません。
誤字も多く、推測しながら読まないといけないのもマイナスです。

「MVCモデルを実現してるフレームワークです」「Ruby on Railsの影響を受けているそうです」「圧倒的な生産性なんです」という噂とは裏腹に、巷での例は断片的なシンタックスの説明、テーブルのメンテナンスかScaffoldを使ったくらい。CakePHP全体を開発レベルで記述している記事を日本語では、ほとんど見たことがありませんでした。
といって自分で実用的なアプリケーションを書こうといろいろ調べて書いていてぶち当たる疑念が「ほんとうにこれが正しい方法なのか？」「他にいい方法はないのか？」。。。
私はこの本が出版される日を待っていました。期待どおり看板に偽りなく、CakePHPをフルに使った場合の開発の王道を示してくれています。おそらく、この本を読んだ人から、次々に実用システム、インテグレーションの現場にCakePHPが活用されていくのではないでしょうか。
日本で新しい技術が広まるためには、良著が必須です。この本は、CakePHPの活用シーンを大きく発展させると思います。
CD-ROMがついていない、自らコードを積み重ねていけるところも好感がもてます。
